Sounds Like
“Their strings, piano and drums contain so much emotion and patience it’s impossible not to be instantly impressed as they convey the paradoxical states of lazy joy, tired euphoria and quiet confession.” (Clash Magazine)
Over their two-year existence, The Sky At Night have been eight, are usually six, and are always three people who enjoy making beautiful sounds with their instruments. Their debut self-released album, "Hope For Dummies" is to be released in MAY 2006 by Glasgow-based Hijacked Records. Hope For Dummies has been called an astonishingly accomplished record for a first effort. The delicacy of it all is shocking, and The Sky At Night are clearly not simply following what is in vogue. Hoping for word-of-mouth success, 'Hope For Dummies' is a real find. (THISISNOTTV) In short, hope for dummies is a beautiful little record (Is This Music?)
This month BIG team up with the institution that is Triptych to bring you a day of psychadelic audio and 12-String hallucinatory folk in the form of James Blackshaw. Supporting will be one of Edinburgh's freshest and most innovative folk & blues talents Ewan Gibson and the ever handsome BIG DJs (The Frantic Ant & Godot).
James Blackshaw "A supernatural twelve-string diviner, James Blackshaw’s intoxicating muse educes European classicism, contemporary minimalism, exquisite melody and nigh-on Balearic trance. His incredible, finger-picking idiom pays lavish homage to the guitar mavericks of Sixties folk / raga melting pot Takoma (John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Robbie Basho et al). His instrumentals have been exalted by Pitchfork, Uncut, The Wire – and he’s toured with the likes of Espers, Sir Richard Bishop and Marissa Nadler. His latest album, The Cloud of Unknowing, is extraordinary. He will take your breath away."
