THE SMOKE PRESENTS CUT LIKE A CRYSTAL
Manic Melbourne outfit The Smoke return from the ether to unleash their brand new EP, Cut Like A Crystal, upon the unsuspecting masses.
From the fevered minds of Dane Robertson (vox), Ryan Ferguson (skins), Luke Cartwright (axe), Daniel Mullens (axe, low axe, Hammond in extremus) and Leigh Mullens (axe, low axe), The Smoke skate the hard edge of indie rock with an entrancing tilt towards the eclectic.
Aided and abetted by the legendary producer Lindsay Gravina, Cut Like A Crystal is a blinding follow Up to The Smoke’s 2009 debut, Blood Orange.
The title track is the first sparkler to be plucked from the EP’s glowing mine of shimmering gems. A suitably bold first statement, the track is redolent with insistent beats, slicing guitar and a vocal line that sits you down, slaps you around and demands your undivided attention. Cut Like A Crystal is part brat, part swagger, part suburban cowboy and an intensely addictive three-minute slab of self-assured strut.
But it’s not all lovingly dealt backroom beatings on The Smoke’s watch. Young Heat is a sweeping, open-chorded patchwork of indie pop at its sweetest, albeit with a sly eye to the sinister. Just like that time at college when the nerdy girl suddenly took off her glasses and was hot, not unlike Kelly Le Brock in her heyday, Young Heat too is the stuff of teenage dreams and adolescent fantasies.
Returning to the dark side, Red Wine & Swine is one showy little bitch of a number. All burgundy lips, six-inch stilettos and sensual drip—entrancing, potentially fatal and impossible to ignore.
Upping the ante and taking joy in the anthemic, Time Is Short brims with fist pumping potential and is certain to have audiences joining in its sing-along chorus with gusto.
Cut Like A Crystal is available now at the iTunes music store.
