THE SOLES / in under 70 words
The Soles are an incendiary up and coming act with a live show brimming with an energy and sound in the spirit of fellow Canadian Alt. rockers Arcade Fire as well as Muse (throw in some early U2 and Radiohead too). With an interest in First Nations Activism and a positive non-religious, non-preachy New Spiritual message, Din is leading The Soles to a bright future of inspiring, thoughtful and emotional new music.
BIO /
Since their formation date of February 16 2001, The Soles have been honing their incendiary, soulful and energetic live act as well as crafting a fresh rock sound; combining the influences of alternative-rock, pop-rock and roots/acoustic music. Thrown into the mix is a sensibility (and delusions of grandeur – some claim) that make this band believe they can change people’s lives through songs (or at least themselves). “Maybe I’m just satisfied that we’ve allowed our music to consistently speak to a higher ideal,” say’s lead singer Din Yalonen, “Whether it works is up to the listener to decide.”
The songs their recently released album 'You Burst Into Fire Again’ (Remastered) LP DinArts, 2009 were recorded over a three-year period. The album features the lead track Sky (In The Name Of You), which was co-written and produced by Marc Nadjiwan. The song was directly inspired by a First Nations No-Uranium blockade dispute near Ottawa, Ontario. Din was moved by the commitment of the Native's and the Settlers there to work in harmony with each other to defend their exploitation of their land. YBIFA also includes Coals, which has received much US radio airplay alongside Sky. It has also generated some college radio play across Canada.
Many of the songs on this debut album express the challenges of dealing with depression. On tracks like Sunburst, Coals and Pain, lead singer/songwriter Din has taken the risk to utterly expose this reality, "Depression has been with me for over a decade, and I realized had a choice to heal myself; I chose to make absolutely sure I solved the problem." Note: After four years of treatment, Din is now healed and is allowing the music to spread a message that there are solutions available; all one has to do is choose to find them. The Song on YBIFA all speak of this theme. Recorded from summer 2004 to spring 2008, this album chronicles that journey - finding help, friends, band-mates and even a little hope & joy along the way.
hey Bro. Is Eve from the band calles Hey Ocean? if so i have seen them a few times in Victoria as this is where they are from. anyhow, i just noticed the comment. as well im loving the Hey Old Man remix!!
Great set by Din at the Supermarket, a singer songwriter that brims of warm optimism. Open Mic's like this provide an opportunity for local talent, quite often on the fringe of the scene, to showcase their musical gifts. That's what makes Toronto so great.
