Influences
60s British Invasion, Americana, alt.country, Dylan, 90s Britpop
Sonny Humbucker is central Iowa’s premier guitar-driven rock band. Our specialty is radically retooling select songs by 60s British Invasion bands such as the Who, the Kinks, Badfinger, and, of course, the Beatles. In addition, we perform original tunes (including "Ruby and Pearl" and "Bourbon on Ice"), songs from Thom's days with the Rathbones, as well as covers of songs by popular alternative and indie rock groups.
The Sonny Humbucker Band includes three Simpson College faculty members: David Wolf (associate professor of English) on lead guitar, Mark Juffernbruch (associate professor of accounting) on rhythm guitar, and Mark Green (professor of management) on bass. Singer Thom Wright graduated from Simpson in 1988. He was lead singer for the Rathbones during the 1990s; he is now an architect employed by RDG Planning & Design in Des Moines. Drummer and vocalist David Kochel, co-founder of JDK Marketing & Public Affairs consultancy, rounds out the group.
