The Sorries - Live in Edinburgh

The debut CD from The Sorries, featuring 6 live tracks, is available to buy now for just £5.60 including postage & packaging.

The Sorries are Douglas Kay (vocals, guitar, bodhran) and Martin Philip (vocals, guitar, bodhran). The duo sing, play and smile their way through a show inspired by the music of The Corries; performing a selection of tunes from that well-loved songbook as well as a few satirical comedy songs which cast a sardonic eye on the political and public life of present-day Scotland.

Douglas Kay started playing acoustic gigs around Edinburgh in 1995 and has honed his skills through gigs in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Europe as well as radio appearances in Britain and Australia. His extended travels have given him a wide range of influences and experiences which inform his performances both as a solo artist (The Douglas Kay Band: www.douglaskay.com ) and with The Sorries.

Martin Philip has toured in Europe and America as front man of the groove trio Gecko 3 ( www.gecko3.com ) playing the Skye festival, the Redbourn Festival, Ca Jazz a Huy and Ronnie Scott’s amongst others. In the last year the trio supported Roy Ayers, the Quantic Soul Orchestra and Spanky Wilson as well as the Cuban Brothers. He also appeared as a singer on KT Tunstall’s first album Eye to the Telescope. During The Sorries’ autumn tour Martin will be delivering a lecture to the Walter Scott Society in Selkirk in celebration of the two hundredth anniversary of Scott’s ‘Marmion’.

The two formed The Sorries following a conversation during a tour of the Highlands where both Gecko 3 and Douglas Kay were performing alongside Amplifico. Coming from very different current musical projects, Kay and Philip discovered a shared love for the music of The Corries. It occurred to them that the most successful Scottish folk group of all time had been a duo of singer-songwriters, and yet no one appeared to be replicating that success on the modern scene. The duo, they decided is an ideal format in which to present so many of the sensational folk songs in which Scotland is so rich. That (late) night, the two resolved to join forces.

The Sorries made their live debut in December 2006 and during 2007 moved from the pubs and student unions of Edinburgh to the halls of Moray and on to Glencoe's famous Clachaig Inn. A busy and successful first year for the duo ended with a special Hogmanay show at Peat-By-The-Bridge in Inverness. 2008 has seen the duo build on this success with several notable gigs including a sell out show at the Warehouse Theatre, Lossiemouth in April, and a concert in the Isle of Eigg Community Hall in July. October sees the lads embark on their first tour of The Scottish Borders.

Hi guys, thanks for the add!
We are from Flanders and we were on a citytrip in Edinburgh.
We saw the Sorries playing in the Scotman's lounge and enjoyed their performance very much.
Beautiful songs, wonderful harmonies, a lot of emotion, and a great atmosphere...!

Top night on Friday. First Sorries gig and you know what? I don't even think it'll be my last. No more higher praise than that.

Loved Friday's gig. I can remember it even through Tuckeresque proportions of lager and jack, which means it must've been great.

You should really get beards though.

there is word on the Nu- trad folk underground that there will be a Sorries gig this Friday somewhere in Market Street Edinburgh. Is it industry & insiders only or can any rabble be roused?
