"'Morose songwriting' + 'Beatlesque melodies' = the alluring sound of Brisbane alternative band The Soundcasters" - Samuel Kerr, Scene Magazine.
Recently described as "what Powderfinger would sound like if they listened to a lot of Pixies", The Soundcasters are a 4 piece band from Brisbane, Australia. Originally formed by Clint Morrow as an outlet for a few songs he'd written in his bedroom, the project quickly transformed into a fully fledged rock outfit with the songwriting duties shared between Clint (guitar) and Anthony Swann (bass).
The seeds of the band were sown in the now-defunct indie outfit Bliss Invaders where Clint Morrow and drummer Ben Thompson were the rhythm section. After Bliss Invaders broke up in late 2007 Clint went on to play bass in The Westminsters and began writing songs with plans for a solo project. After playing some new material for Ben in April 2008 they decided to form The Soundcasters, eventually roping in Anthony on bass, and his brother Andrew Swann on Guitar. Brisbane songwriter John Meyer has also been known to make guest appearances on guitar from time to time.
The Soundcasters made their live debut at the QUT Guild Bar in late September 2008, sharing the stage with The Internalists, The Reversals and Mr Rascal, and have since played regularly at such Brisbane institutions as Ric's Bar and the Verve Cafe.
The band's musical influences range from early nineties grunge to mid-sixties pop with Jeff Buckley and Morrissey-inspired morose lyricism. With two prolific songwriters and a large backlog of material, The Soundcasters more often than not will road test at least one new song at every gig.
The Soundcasters' debut album 'Unhinged' is due for release in July 2009. Originally intended to be a small EP, the band became ambitous during the first week of recording with producer Martin MacDonald and decided to double the length of the project. The band will be launching the album at The Troubadour on Friday 24th July with John Meyer and Kristian James in support. The Soundcasters will then be going on a joint tour with John Meyer taking in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
