InfluencesA quick quote we would like to share with you from Brian Eno:

"Brian, What differentiates Krautrock from Anglo-American rock?"
"The thing that appealed to me was the discipline -- it was as if they'd decided that their project, in a typically German way, was to make a pure rock music that was stripped of superfluities, of showbiz. So you had Neu!, for instance, who basically played that one beat; presumably Klaus Dinger thought it was the quintessential rock beat. I thought that was wonderful. It was a very uncompromising type of music, consciously experimental, and conscious of which particular experiment it was trying to do. It was actually completely anti-Hollywood, which appeals to me, of course"

NME Radio Session. Recorded Tuesday August 19th

The Early Years have just recorded a live session and interview for the new NME Radio station which is scheduled to be aired sometime in the next few weeks. We'll keep you posted with the dates and times.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Early Years release limited single 'Like A Suicide/The Computer Voice' // Monday July 21 2008

"Sonic Cathedral is 10! Yes, incredibly, less than two years after our first release, we are proud to announce our 10th single – by THE EARLY YEARS – which is available as a limited-edition yellow vinyl seven-inch from Monday, July 21.
We’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve put the east London-based four-piece on at Sonic Cathedral, but it must be approaching double figures; they even played twice in one night when they were ‘sound carriers’ for the legendary Damo Suzuki. The thing is, we never get tired of seeing them and frequently tell anyone who will listen that they are 'the best live band in Britain!'"
Now, however, after many months of work on what will become their second album, they’ve returned with two self-produced tracks and have managed to up the stakes even higher!"

Sonic Cathedral© ; Press Release SCR010

""Like A Suicide" combines wistful, pastel meandering with early Talking Heads rock drive. It throbs in a phallic way that twatish Stones inflatable cocks never did. This out-krauts all manner of Devo autobahn devotees in it's relentless, compelling, cymbal splashed and guitar slashed, irresistible brain-blitz.
IS IT ANY GOOD? It may sound staggeringly obvious, but The Early Years play with inspiration born of sweat-earnt competence, they swagger with simple and well placed belief in themselves and their, their, you know, their whole thing stinks of excellence, bravery, innovation, pin-point theft from the vaults of the great and everything. They are there to be loved, do so!"

"A mechanical flit, like a playing card in the rusty spokes of a slowly turning bicycle wheel, and we're off into The Early Years world once again.
Throbbing keyboards and glitchy robotic drum patterns lead us through the circuitry of a song that gives praise at the pristine altar of Krautrock and takes on the name of legendary post punk visionaries Suicide.
As the track grows, the claustrophobia builds, guitars tear across the song like lightning flashes in a bleak mechanized landscape. It steals the breath from your lungs!
It's an exhilarating clash of the human and the electronic, and really, there is no better way for Sonic Cathedral to celebrate their 10th single release!"

"The band have cranked a few levers and boosted themselves into electronica hyperdrive. Electricity-comes-from-other-planets... deliciously disorientating it's kosmiche electro space-drone glitch disco and I reckon it could sound ALMIGHTY live!
AA side 'The Computer Voice' sounds like machines communicating, all flickering static and glowing wires. An intriguing aperitif to the second album."

KittenPainting© 2008

"Single of the Week **** In a timely and celebratory fashion, Sonic Cathedral release a 2-sided limited edition 7 inch single and it really does seem to celebrate all things electronic, with splashes of Nittzer Ebb, Cabaret Voltaire, David Byrne & Eno. If this is endemic of the drone genre, then it isn’t a bad place to be at all!"

Manchester Music© July 2008

"East London krautrockers The Early Years release their first single in 18 months. It sounds like LCD Soundsystem fronted by Scott Walker while someone puts a guitar through a mangle... unsuprisingly Brian Eno is a huge fan!"

NME© 9:07:2008

"Chilling melancholy glides along wistfully with the monochromed electronic beat, the bleeding guitars and droning solo stirring things up into a wondrous collision of drama and melancholy…."

The Early Years Revisited

With all this talk about Krautrock, it seems appropriate to revisit one of the most under-rated bands of the last couple of years - The Early Years. Their self-titled debut album from 2006 was criminally ignored by almost everyone when it came to the end-of-year best ofs. The album was good, but that's not my concern here. It's actually one of the band's lesser-known tunes, tucked away on a b-side, but in my opinion their finest hour. This is where they show off their true Krautrock credentials.

More than that, the track I Heard Voices, is right up there with the greats. The Early Years are a band who know how to use their effects pedals, and they’ve manipulated their sound to perfection on this tune. The drumming is nothing short of superb and it’s this rhythmic thread that holds everything together so well. At almost 12 minutes long it may appear daunting, but never once does it outstay its welcome. In fact, given the slow measured build-up through this whole time, when they're about to end it, they’ve got themselves into such a fantastic groove that you just don’t want it to stop. I could listen to it for another 12 minutes at least.

Here’s hoping for more Early Years goodness in 2008!

Great album - just dug back into it recently as I uncovered it to my surprise languishing in a drawer.... Just that nice spacey edgy feel, but less vague vocally - good combo!
