J. Vega, Jim Pane, and Keith Klein formed The Speeds in early 2003 with the vision of creating tight, energetic, melodic power pop in a classic vein for a new generation.
The first order of business was the self-produced "Ask Me" EP and a relentless tour of the Northeast. The tracks "Ask Me if I Care" and "Message for You" were both honored as "Single of the Week" on Popbang Radio, the internet's hottest power-pop station, and the former was featured on XM radio and added to the soundtrack of MTVs Laguna Beach Season 1 DVD. The editors of Billboard Magazine selected The Speeds from over 1000 bands to be one of six top acts performing at the 2005 Independent Music World Series, the country's largest unsigned music showcase. "Ask Me if I Care" was picked as the lead track on Discmakers high profile IMWS Northeast compilation CD, and subsequently spent several weeks in the BroadJam Alternative Rock Top 10.
The Speeds signed with New Jersey's Kool Kat Musik and in Summer 06 released their highly-anticipated debut album "Sing It Loud". They were highlighted as the “Top New Indie Artist” on the LA Music Pipeline, BigFM Radio’s most popular show with over ten million European listeners. Within six months, "Sing it Loud" received play on over two hundred stations across North America, locally including The X, K-Rock, Star 100.7, and 'DVE. Within their hometown, the group has played every conceivable venue from Z Lounge and The Rex Theater to Market Square and Heinz Field.
In addition to Laguna Beach, Speeds music has been licensed to Fox Sports, NASCAR Productions, Road Rules, The Real World, The Hills, and nearly a dozen other programs for MTV, E! TV, and Oxygen Network.
Following the late addition of Rusted Root sideman Dirk Miller, the enhanced lineup performed on the MTV Choose or Lose Tour and finished their long awaited new album "City For Sale".
