The Spires Live on Hallam FM
"We have found an unsigned band that sound absolutely amazing! We have had hundreds of entries. I am pleased to anounce that we have the best unsigned act in South Yorkshire supporting INXS at the City hall. THE SPIRES!! ''
[Big John at Breakfast, Hallam FM]
The Creative Corporation
"A Cathedral of beautiful sound, The Spires. One of the bands to keep an eye on in 2009!"
[Dave Stansbie, Creative Director - The Creative Corporation]
The Spires @ The Boardwalk, Sheffield
"The Spires kicked out a 24 carat hatrick. A hot chunk of rock that won me over completely. The Spires have killer tunes."
[Radio Coma Magazine]
The Spires @ Bar Matrix, Sheffield
Here tonight are the Spires. A band with something to say, and more importantly a band with something worth listening to, so worth listening to in fact that tonight they get an encore. The standout track of the evening being the edgy and Cure inspired ’17 Years’. Musically tighter than Fern Britten’s size ten cocktail dress, they play with an energy that only rightly justified self confidence can bring. This is certainly a band to make you stop and think.
[Tom Bowen, Sandman Magazine]
The Spires @ The Leadmill, Sheffield
The local support for the mid week Leadmill gig, The Spires are one of the most engaging and entertaining bands on the Sheffield circuit at present. This electro-rock outfit draw influences from four decades of music, throw it into the melting pot with nitro-glycerine until it explodes in an adrenaline fuelled performance that gives you the buzz live music is intended to do. This electro-rock outfit has a distinguished sound that pushes the boundaries of rock-pop. The guitars thrash and grind with heavy drums and swirling keyboard, and a buoyant front man not only draws in the crowd with his energetic rapport, but can also hold a note. Exhausting.
[Richard Oldale, Sandman Magazine]
T H E - B A N D :
Formed in their native Sheffield, The Spires are Matt Smith (vocalist), Matt Pike (guitar), Matt Dacey (drums and percussion), Brian Ferry (Keys) and James Lowe (bass). Their individual style of electro-rock and 'hard style indie pop' (NME) has established The Spires as one of the most fresh and exciting new acts to arrive on the music scene. You can hear echoes of The Cure, Joy Division and Bloc Party within their music, but The Spires rise above the volatile and fragile pressures of whatever happens to be currently fashionable and carve out their own unique landscape. There is a pulsating ebb and flow to every element of their work, both layered and complex, but always with an eye to the melodic undercurrent that follows whatever creative path they feel compelled to pursue.
The Spires leave a trail of captivated audiences in their wake as they instigate an aural attack on the ears and 'explode in an adrenaline fuelled performance that gives you the buzz live music is intended to do' (Sandman Magazine). Such reviews have earned them support slots with Idlewild, One Night Only, Iglu & Hartly and even the mighty INXS on the Sheffield-leg of their world tour. Earlier this year, Embrace's Danny McNamara earmarked The Spires as 'ones to watch' and personally requested them to feature on BBC One's 'Inside Out' show before inviting the band to appear at his hugely successful Aftershow night in Manchester.
Listen out because there will be much more to hear from this talented five-piece over the coming year...
