i like falling over and playing on bikes, so i like mountain biking which neatly combines the two.

i like people who don't take themselves too seriously and like messing about, which is why i love the spokes!

i want a bike with wheels of fire, i will make it happen

Joanna, Student

The Bicycle:

"The bicycle has been responsible for more movement in manners and morals than anything since Charles the Second. Under it's influence, wholly or in part, have wilted chaperons, long and narrow skirts, tight corsets, hair that would come down, black stockings, thick ankles large hats, prudery and fear of the dark; under its influence, wholly or in part, have bloomed weekends, strong nerves, strong legs, strong language, knickers, knowledge of make and shape, knowledge of woods and pastures, equality of sex, good digestion and professional occupation- in four words, the emancipation of women." (Galsworthy, 1890)

   The Spokes's Blurbs
About me:

The Spokes are an all-woman all-bike-loving bicycle dance troupe. Basically we want to entertain people by choreographing and performing synchronized bike riding/ dancing and tricks.

In a wider sense we want to: Promote bicycle riding,

Promote riding bikes as a mode of transport that is safer, more sociable, more rewarding, more fun, less damaging to ourselves and the people and environment around us than this massive car culture,

Promote positive self image for people no matter what their body shape or appearance, and to celebrate the empowerment of women,

Encourage health and fun exercise that isn't in boring expensive gyms,

Encourage people and ourselves to live out our craziest dreams every moment,

Have masses of fun and encourage others to aswell..

we love bikes so much that we want to dance with them and celebrate their amazingness...

we don't like borders, sexism, racism, animal abuse, patriarchy, xenophobia, lgbTphobia, social control and lots of other horrid horrid things

we do love bikes, having fun, trees, dancing, vegan cakes, dressing up, pretending to be bicycling pirates and all sorts of other fun and mischief

bikes are fun...lets dance!

NLF3's music has been described as "a kitsch This Heat" by The Wire, and compared for its rhythms to a 2009 version of the Ege Bamayasi-era of Can. The Guardian even spoke of them as "a Radiohead seduced by the idea of live improvisation". The members of NLF3 - F.lor, Mitch and Don Nino - name influences as varied as Pierre Henry, Fela Kuti, Steve Reich, Ennio Moricone, as well as Syd Barrett, Zappa, Fantomas, Aphex Twin, and Sonic Youth. Strange gurus indeed, for a music that, after all these comparisons, still sounds unique. NLF3 is the story of three music lovers – two brothers in blood and a third in spirit – united by the same passion: to make music, record it and take it all around the world. In that regard, their kinship with Battles and Animal Collective, with whom they have toured, seems perfectly natural - they all belong to the same generation of musicians and have the same desire to discover new territory, to explore new possibilities and to bring together past and future. It comes as no surprise either that the brothers F.lor and Don have lived in Germany as well as the US, and have spent some time in Nigeria where their father introduced them to the great Fela Kuti and others like the sculptor Twin Seven Seven. www.myspace.com/nlf3

Vampire Blues is the duo of guitar player Jon Collin (Serfs, The Whole Voyald) and harmonium player Jon Marshall (The Hunter Gracchus, Peril Hill). They have a pretty special tape out on Blackest Rainbow. We can't recommend them highly enough.

The Fifth Band is the gobsmacking trio of Stephen Lawrie (The Telescopes), Bridget Hayden (Vibracathedral Orchestra) and Chris Hladowski (The Family Elan). Oof.

A Wake is the duo of Nick Mitchell and Fliss Horrocks who also play in Beach Fuzz.
This will actually probably end-up being a Beach Fuzz performance - this incarnation's first inside the UK.
