In his quest to achieve world-wide fame as a kazoo playing bowler, Salem, Oregon resident P. D. Herman hitchhiked north on Portland Road, searching for Northgate Bowl. With a kazoo in his mouth and bowling ball in his hand, P. D. soon figured out that the rude gestures coming from cars were, in fact, meant for him, and that, yes, he should probably not walk with his thumb sticking out. After numerous stops for soda, chips and beef jerky, P.D. soon arrived at the corner of Northgate Avenue and Portland Road. There he came upon a 40-something bearded man sleeping in a bus shelter. The man had a strong scent of hummus on his breath, drumsticks in his pocket, and looked as if he had been on the street for sometime. To awaken the would-be transient, P.D. hummed an old Kiss tune on kazoo. The man, woke up shaking, thinking he was back at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, Ca., with Kiss rocking out onstage. P.D., quickly grabbed the man, shook him, and told him it was now 2009 and the 70’s were in fact, over, and then asked, “By the way, could you direct me to Northgate Bowl?” The 40-something hummus smelling man quickly snapped out of his mid-70’s stupor and replied, “Behind you, dumb-ass!” After that remark, P.D. took his kazoo and bowling ball, and quickly left the bus shelter. As he left, the man, known to the locals on Portland Road as Philth E. Phil, or Philthy Phil, screamed out “Is your head up your butt or what?” P.D. stopped mid-stride, and was quickly transported back to the mid-90s when he was the lead singer for Salem punk band The Left Over Hot Dogs. And yes, they did have one college radio hit with the title “Is Your Head Up Your Butt Or What?” The band eventually disbanded due to P.D.’s obsession with bowling and kazoos. Quickly snapping out of his mid-90’s stupor, P.D. asked Phil if he was a drummer. Phil’s exact response cannot be printed, but the answer was, yes, he was a drummer. In fact, Phil had once been in a Salem band that opened for Ted Nugent at the Armory in the mid 80’s. At the time he was drumming for Heavy Metal Dog Breath, a Krokus cover band from Northeast Salem. Phil and P.D. chatted for a few, and quickly realized that they both had a lot in common; they were jobless, they both liked hummus, and most importantly, they both wanted to revive rock and roll by getting together an obnoxious, 40-something punk band that would wear wigs on stage. P.D. offered to buy Phil a soda inside the bowling alley, so the two walked into Northgate Bowl. Inside, was a local man known as Dirtbag Dave. Dave made his living selling bowling shoes and repairing Commodore 64 computers. He also had played bass in various local bands, including The Ugly Mothers, Man Eating Couch and The Delirious Dirtbags. As P.D. ordered a Sprite for Phil, Dave tried to convince him that what they really needed was bowling shoes. P.D. responded that what they really needed was a bass player. After much negotiating, Dave soon agreed to play bass on three conditions; that the band wear bowling shoes while playing, that Phil would refrain from eating hummus while the band practiced, and that P.D. stop referring to him as Dirthead, when, in fact, it was Dirtbag.
