Rhythm Bomb Recording artists The Star Mountain Dreamers were formed in the west Texas town of El Paso in 2003 by Fred Contreras (guitar) and Tony Estrada (vocals). The thunderous rhythm section of Moe Lopez on bass and Danny Magana on drums, complete this four piece rockin’ band. The Star Mountain Dreamers draw much influence from 1950s rock’n’roll, but stay true to their hearts and the influence of their Mexican-American border town. Whether the music is fueled by tequila, the west Texas heat or the pure love of the music is questionable, but somehow it works and works without formula, inhibition, or subtlety. Having released two albums on their respective record label, both have received rave review at home and abroad. The Dreamers have also put all their heart and passion into their live performances. The Star Mountain Dreamers have played many of the larger rockabilly festivals throughout the United States, Spain and the UK. From songs in the Spanish language of their home, to the traditional rockabilly and rock’n’roll of the American mid-century, these Mexican-American rockers aim to please!

The Star Mountain Dreamers
Much has been said about these fellows from El Paso. In 2005, their first full length CD, Greetings From El Paso, on Rhythm Bomb Records from Berlin, Germany have left a trail of consistently rave reviews. They have been highlights of major rockabilly festivals like Viva Las Vegas and Rockin’ 50’s Fest in Green Bay and The High Rockabilly in Spain. Every word written or spoken about this band from the rockabilly community around the world has been glowing. So, what more can one say?
I can say that I honestly personally know them. I know that they are not only crackerjack performers, but also passionate players. Every second they spend in front of an audience or microphone is precious to them. The songs flow seamlessly while they still keep a freshness that is a rare commodity in vintage music. They are not formulaic and never try to be anything other than what is in their hearts.
As individuals, Tony’s vocals have been penned as a young Ray Harris. His stage presence is smooth, energetic and he is never at a loss for words. His smile alone can hold an audience. Freddy’s guitar licks are both tasteful and rockin‘. He can snap from a sweet accenting rhythm to a full on raving hot solo without missing a beat. Speaking of beats, Danny on the skins is a drummers’ drummer. His rock steady tempos and swinging fills are masterful and slick. I have seen him play with a broken foot and still be better than most. Moe on the upright bass completes the picture. He lays down solid bass lines with real soul. He is what every rockabilly bass player should be. He plays it direct and cool with no filler. Straight up Moe, No chaser!
You put that all together with powerful original tunes and you have El Paso’s Star Mountain Dreamers. They have captured what so many other bands only can dream about: Rockabilly with heart, soul and originality.
