The Stars Down to Earth like: Talking Heads, Flaming Lips, Bowie, Delgados, Belle and Sebastian, Arcade Fire, Grandaddy, Spiritualized, Talk Talk, Sigur Ros, Idlewild, Joy Division, Polyphonic Spree, Clinic, dEUS, Mercury Rev, Hope of the States, Interpol.
"The Stars Down to Earth find themselves miles away from the ‘standard’ drums, bass and guitar format seen in so many indie bands, this is something much, much more. Their catchy hooks reminiscent of Arcade Fire’s early EP’s and the avant-garde guitar work of Mew, create beautifully ambitious sound-scapes that have to be witnessed in a live setting." - www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk
“enough savvy and charm to be a
promising prospect” – Source mag, Brighton
Formed in 2008 by singer Alastair, bassist Toby and keyboard player Chloe, The Stars Down to Earth arose from songs written by Alastair over the previous year. Wishing from the outset to distance themselves from the 4 boys/4 instruments style of indie, they began to put together an array of sounds in order to capture those that had inspired Alastair to write in the beginning. They quickly brought in Becky to sing backing vocals but her extensive talent soon brought her to be behind the drums as well. In 2009 they were joined by guitarist Pepe and glockenspiel player Becca and have been performing as a 6 piece ever since. Their music has taken them from basements in Brighton to lounges in London, and even to a shaky little shack just off the highway in Minneapolis, USA.
They describe their sound as ‘hopecore for the heavy hearted’, writing and singing about hope in the face of danger and despair, about honouring the promises we wish we never made, about how happiness can be uncovered in even the darkest of corners. In the spring of 2009 they were featured in the NME as ‘pick of the week’ for their headline gig at Club NME in Brighton, and in October they recorded a live session for Phil Jackson’s radio programme on BBC South. They have also recorded and released their first EP entirely by themselves.
They have recently been accepted by The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, into their collective known as The Stable (http://twforum.co.uk/stable.htm) which is their own selection of the bands they deem to be the best unsigned talent in the Sussex area.
