The appeal of Steve Taylor-Ramírez’ music crosses the usual boundaries.
“Beautiful … (The Sky's on Fire) is a great song!” said drive-time radio personality Dj Nobody of KUSF, San Francisco. “Steve’s songs are about things that are important … and he’s an awesome guitar player with his own particular style.”
“I love it!” said 17x platinum songwriter/producer Eddie Galán of Steve’s song Only Advertising. 'Eddie G.' is a Grammy voting member and major force behind the music of rising stars The Clique Girlz, Selena Gomez and many more.
"Critic's Choice: Fancy finger picking, weathered vocals ... charisma ... socially conscious originals," wrote j. poet, music critic for the East Bay Express (as well as No Depression, Harp, Paste and other magazines). “Stellar gig,” said senior music critic Joel Selvin of the SF Chronicle. Contra Costa Times critics have given Steve's shows "Best Bet" ratings several times.
“Steve’s a finger-pickin’ pro with songs of revolution and love,” said Kaitlin McGaw, of the SF Grammy office.
Steve's work has also earned praise from Kevin Vance (host of "A Patchwork Quilt," KALW 91.7 FM); Alan Kalter of The Late Show; Corey Mason of worldOneradio (KECG 88.1 FM); and bluegrass Grammy winner Laurie Lewis. Steve’s songs have aired on radio stations KALW, KUSF, KYCY and KECG. He's appeared live on Univision's KDTV, NPR affiliate KALW, KUSF, KALX and Pirate Cat Radio (SF, LA and Berlin).
"I like music that has an edge," he says, "songs that deliver a message, a story, and a bit of humor." For two years, Steve was guitarist for a gospel band at an Oakland church. He has since been booked to play his original music at the UC Berkeley International House, La Peña Cultural Center (as headliner), Great American Music Hall, Starry Plough Pub (twice as headliner), the Make-Out Room, Café du Nord, the SF Folk Festival, L's Cafe, the Plough and Stars Pub (headliner), the Mission Cultural Center and many other venues.
Steve became a journalist after earning a master's degree in Latin American studies and journalism at Columbia University and a BA at Occidental College. He began his working life as a newspaper reporter, and served as a correspondent for the AP, UPI and SF Chronicle. He’s also worked in radio as a writer, reporter and producer, and in television as a writer.
