Since their formation in 2007, The Street Shepherd Band have forged a distinctive flamenco fusion sound that is both exciting and challenging.
Based entirely on the dynamic rhythms of pure flamenco, Street Shepherd explore harmonies from Spain's Celtic northern provinces, as well as the jazz and latin influences already absorbed by this constantly developing art form.
David Shepherd's informed flamenco guitar playing, compositions and arrangements have provided the essential material for Street Shepherd's flamenco fusion programme. David has performed his works at the South Bank/Purcell Room (with flamenco author and guitarist, Marcos) in 1991 and has earned commendations for his playing from the noted flamenco authority Felix Grande. His music displays a complete understanding of traditional flamenco but embraces the many new developments explored by Spain's contemporary performers.
David’s playing is given added breadth by Jools Street's inspired violin work. Jools, a fellow founder member of the group, has spent many years working with diverse contemporary bands (from indie to folk-funk to avant-garde - plus a show at the Royal Albert Hall with Nigel Kennedy) providing him with an eclectic understanding of music. Jools’ ability to thrive in challenging musical situations, together with his singular interpretation of flamenco music, have been vital in shaping the band's unique sound.
The exuberance of Alan Dilan’s percussion playing has rapidly led to his being an essential member of this group since he joined, early in 2008. Alan's family hail from Kurdistan (where music was a part of his daily life) and he studied flamenco guitar on Paco Peña's renowned course at Rotterdam Conservatory. With Street Shepherd, this versatile performer has committed himself to the complex rhythms of flamenco - with dynamic results.
Tony Shepherd developed his cajon playing to support David's guitar music. Gaining much of his playing style through working with many talented flamenco dancers, Tony’s many years experience with the band's flamenco roots are an invaluable element of Street Shepherd performances.
In addition to their instrumental programme, The Street Shepherd Band collaborate with respected flamenco dancer/choreographer, Ana Garcia. Ana's dancing combines all the expressive and percussive qualities associated with contemporary flamenco dance and her appearances are a highlight of any event.
With appearances in 2008 at the Warwick Folk Festival; Birmingham ArtsFest; Positive Images Festival; and Covfest, The Street Shepherd Band's performances are capturing the imaginations of audiences and promoters alike. Here are some of their comments;
"I wandered over to watch ArtsFest's first showcase of the day - The Street Shepherd Band, who's intricate, bluesy flamenco fusion made for a wonderful setting, but by no means background music!" - Stephanie Greenfield - for Birmingham Artsfest 2008.
"Magic performance on Sunday and hope you come back to the Warwick Folk Festival at the GW next year... Truly inspirational" - Matt Hernandez - for GW/Warwick Folk Festival 2008
The Street Shepherd Band has disbanded as of April 2009

A currently shite MySpace page for Midlands bands only.
The point is to use this page to advertise your gigs, wares and to keep in touch with other likeminded bands in the area without feeling like a complete arse for filling fan pages with junk mail. You know who you are!.
Promotions companies may also join so that if they're looking for bands to play a venue in the Midlands, all they have to do is visit this page for local bands to choose from and they have a full spectrum of sounds.
So if you're a new, up and coming talent in the midlands, whether you're a generic Indie band or Cock Rock band get your name down on the list!!!!!
Hey guys! Just stopping by to say "HI" and have a great weekend! Looking forward to coming to hear you play at the Great Western on the 7th Feb! Can't wait!! Love & light Andréa xx :)
