On their sunny debut album, the Sugarettes set themselves up as the Dutch equivalent of the Dandy Warhols: a photogenic, co-ed pop outfit whose songs are packed with equal blasts of sex and sugar. Love & Other Perversities bounces between concise indie pop and lo-fi alternative guitar rock, but the bandmates shine their best on tracks like "Readysteady," where sprightly vocals give way to cheerleader-styled shouts. Elsewhere, they sing the praises of porn stars ("Ron Jeremy"), prostitutes ("Jolene"), and "sex mad maniacs" ("Claps"), but the Sugarettes rarely come across as overly sleazy, quite possibly because the band is so attractive, so happy, and so adorably ballsy. While Iskaa and Joep van Son both share lead vocals, it's Iskaa who emerges as the band's linchpin, her sweet coos and sexy sneers often rising above van Son's harmonies. She flutters into her head voice on "Enola Gay," a crunchy throwback to America's alt.rock heyday, and those fleeting high notes -- which occur halfway through each chorus -- are some of the album's most sexually-charged moments. Love & Other Perversities loses some steam toward the end, as no track can match the hyperactivity of album opener "Readysteady," but the Sugarettes have still crafted a lively, solid debut.

Kunnen ze ook langer dan vijftien minuten boeien? Dat was de prangende vraag na de overrompelende EP Sugarettecity van begin dit jaar. Al in de eerste seconde van dit langspeeldebuut geeft Sugarettes antwoord. Ready Steady spuit uit de boxen. Zoveel energie en spelplezier samengebald in nog geen twee minuten en dertig seconden heb ik niet meer gehoord sinds de debuutdemo van het hoofdstedelijke Voicst. Eerlijk is eerlijk, het Eindhovense viertal maakt het zich hier wel gemakkelijk. De vier nummer van Sugarettecity staan ‘r immers ook op. Betekent een half uur nieuw materiaal. En tja, ook dat staat als een huis. Niet alleen tekstueel, ook muzikaal tonen de Eindhovenaren zich ware swingers. Opzichtig wordt er verleid en geflirt. De slachtoffers? Allen afkomstig uit de jaren tachtig indierock. Throwing Muses, Sonic Youth, wat Pixies, vleugje The Feelies en Jesus & Mary Chain. Sugarettes doet ’t met iedereen. Plichtmatig? Vergeet het maar. Elke seconde van Love & Other Perversities ademt passie, genot en overgave. Dan zijn er nog een handvol prachtige riffs – bijvoorbeeld in Enola Gay en Ron Jeremy Style – en gitaarhooks – die dubbele solo in Bounce. Nee, langer dan vijftien minuten boeien kost ze geen enkele moeite. Fantastisch debuut van een band met durf, lef én ongelooflijk veel talent. THEO PLOEG

Indierock (4 sterren) De Mo-dettes waren meisjes, de Helmettes waren allemaal jongens, maar The Sugarettes zijn half om half: twee om twee. Ze hebben het vuige van The Raveonettes (drie om ÈÈn) en het lieve van The Ronettes (die beehives). En ze zijn verreweg de leukste nieuwe band van Nederland. Sexy Èn Ranzig, natuurlijk opererend vanuit Eindhoven Rockcity. Op het debuut Love & Other Perversities doet het kwartet met zijn gruizige gitaarsound beurtelings denken aan Sonic Youth, The Jesus & Mary Chain, een willekeurige garagerockband en is het niet te stoer om zich in de armen van een ballad te werpen. Het juiste suikergehalte wordt daarbij verzorgd door de haast perfecte man/vrouw harmony-zang van gitaristen Joep en Iskaa, en de onweerstaandbaar poppy melodieÎn van authentieke meezingsnit. Waarna handclaps en mexicaanse trompetjes de luisteraar moe maar gelukkig achterlaten. Je beste vrijpartij ooit vermomd als album, vond een Engelse bewonderaar, en zo is 't maar net.

It’s an album that can leave you breathless, shattered and utterly exhilarated. It’s the best sex you’ve ever had condensed into 13 songs and 37 minutes. I fucking love it.
