The Sugarplum Fairies are comprised of Vienna natives Silvia Ryder (vocals) and Ben Bohm (guitars, background vocals), supplemented by an array of rotating guest musicians. The sound of SPF bridges the transatlantic gap with an amalgamation of European guitar pop and Americana folksiness, all tied together by Ryder's sultry, hypnotic vocals.
In contrast to the conceptual lo-fi approach of their acclaimed sophomore CD "Introspective Raincoat Student Music" SPF's upcoming release "Country International Records" veers from sleepy shoegaze pop to bouncy D.I.Y. indie rock, all with a subtle infusion of country-noir and the occasional hint of eclectic Vaudeville.
For "Country International Records" SPF have teamed up with Ken Coomer of Wilco fame and Charlie Brocco (George Harrison, Jeff Lynne) in Nashville.
Press Excerpts:
"There are albums that simply get you. Lyrics aren't more than simple word combinations, stimulating thoughts you wish you'd had...Among softly strummed guitars, an e-bow, mandolin, piano, glockenspiel and occasional Mazzy Star moments, this duo from Vienna, stationed in California, manages to represent the complicated stages of being broken-hearted, depressed, funny, hot and spaced out all at once, and without complications." (Boston Weekly Dig)
"From a world of melancholia and penetrating songs comes Sugarplum Fairies, who are simply one of the best alt rock acts in the world right now, period. These songs are just so catchy and perfect that they feel like they've been around forever...They are the meeting place between the Velvet Underground and the Beatles" (Independent Artist Company/KIAC Radio)
"A scrumious assortment of big and dreamy pop numbers is what you'll find an the 16-track disc from the duo known as Sugarplum Fairies, which sounds like Belle and Sebastian crossed with The Cardigans...chances are the Carpenter-esque style meets Bacharach songsmith of Sugarplum Fairies will reel you in" (Munchkinmusic Belgium)
"I find myself being nothing but overly charmed by this Vienna-raised and California-based duo, Silvia Ryder and Ben Bohm...There is moments where I hear a twinge of Aimee Mann, or a touch of The Sundays, or a musical vibe close to Cat Power, but then the music washes over me and I find them nothing but divinely unique. Sugarplum Fairies is nothing less than delicious arrays of brilliant, introspective lyrics, vocals that are calming and hypnotizing and instrumentation that is superb and soothing in effect. Overall, the album is a magnificently, glowingly composed masterpiece." (One Times One)
“The Dangerous Science of Young Gentlemen,” Featuring new works by Alexander p. E . DIY Gallery is pleased to present “The Dangerous Science of Young Gentlemen,” featuring new works by Alexander p. E . Through written text, spoken word, and found object sculpture, Alexander produces a radical critique of historical and modern culture, rejecting dominant trends of commodification and detachment. Instead, the artist rearranges the banal objects of everyday life into forms vibrant with theory and thought. What results is a snapshot of history quite unlike what you may have been taught – and a glimpse of the future, shaped by freedom and the creative will. “The Dangerous Science of Young Gentlemen” opens Saturday, June 28th with a reception from 7-11 P.M. 1218 W Temple Street, 90026
Little Utopia Closing Reception - Saturday June 14 7-11 p.m.
DIY Gallery is pleased to present “Little Utopia,” a new installation by Chris Avitable, James Fish, and Mario Richeda. Combining collage, painting, sound, and sculpture furniture, the artists share a vision of Utopia / Dystopia. Drawing inspiration from literature, sci-fi movies and music, this exhibit makes an effort to redefine a contemporary vision of Utopia. In this “perfect world” functionality meets simplicity, and mutates the familiar everyday surroundings. The result is more than just perfect. Come dream with us…if only for a little while.
