The Supercarters are born of the college rock, new wave and punk scenes of 1980s New Orleans. The core of the band played together in Nuclear Choir and upon the demise of the Choir formed the Supercarters. The current lineup includes Ed Mitchell on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Dave Baker on bass, keyboards and backing vocals, Dave Becker on lead guitar and Elzy Lindsey on drums, electronic percussion and backing vocals.
On the weekend of August 13, 2007, Ed Mitchell drove up to Elzy's house in Fairview, NC and recorded 11 songs with Dave and Elzy. Dave recorded the session on a Fostex MR-8 digital 8 track recorder.
All tracks were live, with drums being run through a PA down to one track on the Fostex. This means there are no "modern, fancy drum fixes". With 11 songs being recorded in a weekend they all had to be one or two-takers. Initial vocals and guitars were simply "dummy tracks" as the Fostex MR-8 only allows recording of 2 tracks simultaneously. Ed and Dave laid the guitars, bass and backing vocals after Elzy okayed the drum tracks. On Labor Day weekend, Elzy's father-in-law visited, violin in hand, and added fiddle to the tracks as they sat on the back porch, soaking in the mountain air and enjoying BBQ. The following weekend, Dave Becker came in from Durham, NC, where he now resides, and played lead guitar. After this weekend, Christian Woodall of Hellblinki Sextet dropped a trumpet line in "Beautiful Day" prior to practicing with Dave and Elzy on a project they're working on. Dave Baker took these tracks and popped them into his Mac, using Logic Express and mixed them, continually tweaking and refining them, all the while realizing the little things we learned AFTER recording that we should have done. The result is here for you to enjoy. A pure basement demo CD, showcasing the genius simplicity of Ed Mitchell's lyricism, the honey sweet, yet mournful quality of his voice, the Beach Boys harmonies he and Dave so readily perform, the unfiltered sound of Elzy's drums, mic-ed with a $100 set of Guitar Center drum mics, Dave Becker's tone-rich one take leads, Steve Weiss' back porch violin, Christian's trumpet flexing and Dave's stumble-in-the-dark,holistic production prowess and multi-instrumentalism that make this band a real treat. Here's hoping you discover a diamond in the rough. If you like what you hear, let us know... more importantly, spread the word! Who knows what can happen if enough folks turn on to our little experiment?
