The Supernaturals were a Scottish band, formed in the 90s and fronted by singer/songwriter/guitarist James McColl.
They are best remembered for their hits "Smile", "I Wasn't Built to Get Up", "Love Has Passed Away" and "The Day Before Yesterday's Man".
The band formed in the summer of 1993 and their first gig was at the Ferryboat Inn, Skye Bridge, Kyle of Lochalsh. Soon after they begged and borrrowed the money to produce and release two EP's on their own label, OFL (offal) and then were signed by Food records' Andy Ross on November 17th, 1995 (at 4.30pm precisely, according to Mark...and who are we to doubt him?!) Andy paired the group with Chris De Burgh's long time producer Pete Smith and the unusual coupling worked like a treat, capturing the bands essence perfectly!
The band have supported the Bluetones, Ash, Gun, Kula Shaker, the Boo Radleys, Tina Turner, Gene, Paul Weller and most recently Robbie Williams and have been nominated for 2 major awards; the Ivor Novello award for Smile (when they were up against 'The Verve' and 'Radiohead'!) and the best newcomers in the Brit awards '96 which was won by Kula Shaker.
Since the band split up, some of the members have been involved with other music projects, with James McColl currently playing guitar and writing for female-fronted Glasgow band "The Hussy's", and Paul Malcolm now a solo folk artist.
