Since the epic first gig opening for Dick Dale at The Picador in Iowa City, The Surf Zombies
have smashed attendance records at every event. The Surf Zombies were formed in 2005 after Groovy
Guitar Guru Brook Hoover began scoring songs for film. Forming a band and taking these instrumental party
anthems to the street has been one of his most successful ventures yet. The first cd record has proven to be
a hit on itunes and attracts fans from across the globe.
Initially the band featured Iowa city’s own Jim Viner on drums, and Doug Roberson on guitar. Viner and Roberson were too busy touring Europe with The Diplomats of Solid Sounds to keep pace with The Surf Zombies grueling schedule of writing recording and gigging so the amazing Erik "Possum" Marshall brought in as the only replacement possible for Viner and the savage Mr. Kyle D. Oyloe was recruited for 2nd Guitar and baritone guitar. The ever reliable and always menacing Mr. Joel
McDowell has stood firm playing his original late 50’s jazz bass since the band began. The Surf Zombies
play a stunning 45-60 minute set slamming out tune after tune of soaring summer fun. Past gigs
include appearances at Wizard gallery openings, Flying Eyeball Reunion car show The Putnam Art
Museum in Davenport, RIBCO, The Mill, The Picador, Iowa City Yacht Club, Bricks’, The Irish Democrat,
Tornados’ and St Jude’s’ Sweet corn Fest. The Surf Zombies successfully straddle the line between hip
alternative underground, retro and kid friendly family fun.
Brook Hoover and Joel McDowell have been tearing up stages all across the Midwest for decades with
Meerkats, Motorolas, Dick Prall Band, Circle of Fiends, Spider Gear and Sarah Cram and the Derelicts.
Mesmerized by the sound of surf guitar as children surf instrumentals’ healing mystical qualities have influenced
their lives ever since. Erik Marshall also plays with the Meerkats. Kyle Oyloe appears with Sarah Cram
and Meerkats. Together these men have banded together to bring you THE SURF ZOMBIES’ very first compact
disc. Recorded at John Svec’s, Minstrel Studio in Iowa City with Justin Kennedy mixing and engineering,
THE SURF ZOMBIES bring you the most thrilling regional record of our time.
Feel the heat of the tubes from the amps as these boys rev up and rock. Lose yourself in the reverb, but don't
forget to come up for air! Warning: you may become intoxicated by the savage jungle rhythms, the swirling
tremolo of the dueling guitars. THE SURF ZOMBIES are stalked by hotrod culture fans, tattoo junkies,
punkers, roots rockers, the power pop crowd and fans of great guitar work and all things cool.
Enjoy the vibes! BELIEVE THE HYPE!
