The Sweet Chap - guitars, synths, programming and vocals.
The Chap sang with backing band 11:11, who also backed him at his Sweet Chap Residency in Hoxton Square, as well as the 2005 festivals Bestival and The Secret Garden Party.
11:11 are: James Barnett - formerly from rock/dance act Arkana on lead guitar and vocals. Amachi Agugwa on synth bass (keytar) and electric bass, and Geoff Southhall on synth, sampler and drum pads; both were former members of renowned music collective One Giant Leap.
Sounds Like
"[The Sweet Chap] slurps with solitary songwriting deftness" The Fly
"Yet another artist with his finger on the pulse" DJ Magazine
"A certain grubby, rambshackle style... coming on like a 'Bone Machine' era Tom Waits" NME
Of a five string guitar and its six finger picking,
And the mumbling of words that are sweet yet unfitting,
With a digital murmur and a rocking chair creek,
This twisted of discos becomes now complete...
I’m the Sweet Chap, a producer, songwriter and performer from Brighton, South England.
I wrote and recorded an album called Disco For A Domestic.
I came to London with my record, and was signed by a little indie record label called Protest Recordings. They were an internet based record label, and one of the first of their kind - in fact possibly the only one of their kind.
We set up a website where people could listen to the album. We even created an album sleeve and put it up on the site. This was a concept album – its only format was the Internet itself. We released singles from the album. We made videos. These could all be watched from the website. The album received great critical acclaim. I put together a band and we toured.
Then we were told my latest single Rummage was to be single of the week in NME. It couldn’t get any better for an up and coming artist and new label.
But then came the dawn of the free music website and the eve of the free download. Protest Recordings simply couldn’t compete any longer against a new downloading generation. They eventually called it a day.
But Disco For A Domestic remained – tucked away in the world of domain names and downloads, waiting to be discovered and enjoyed by future music explorers. It may stay there for as long as the World Wide Web exists and when the Sweet Chap has long been forgotten…
I went on to write lots of new material and my latest project is called ‘Huh?’ The songs are inspired by a quote I heard from a film critic commenting on the director David Lynch– ‘David gets into your head with his films, but once he’s there he doesn’t do anything with it.’
These songs are thought provoking but arbitrary in their meaning; ambiguous but profound I guess.
Let me know what you think, and I hope you enjoy them.
