Sounds Like
Tam Lin are passionate performers of music and song from the British Isles, Ireland, France and Asturia (Northern Spain) and you can also expect some hints of old time mountain music and maybe the odd Cajun tune or two. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We sound like Tam Lin, but if you like Planxty, Patrick Street, The House Band, Boys of the Lough, Mozaik then you may well enjoy Tam Lin.
Alan Hewson: ''''''' Alan is from Tyneside; he has a passion for singing & is regarded as one of England's top bodhrán players. His first radio broadcast was his award winning song 'The Children' in 1983. Since then he has fronted several bands and worked with various musical partners on a variety of projects. He has performed to thousands on national radio, at festivals, and in the most intimate of venues in every county in England and Scotland. ................................................................................................................................................
Roberto Garcia: '''' Rob was born in London of Spanish parents. He is a classically trained guitarist, studying at music conservatoires in the UK, Spain and Sweden. He has played solo and duo recitals in the UK and Europe and has been a teacher. His musical tastes and influences range from Classical Baroque to Irish folk, and Flamenco. With Tam Lin he plays mandolin and octave mandola. Personal projects include adaptations and arrangements of Irish fiddle tunes for the mandolin, and delving into Spanish folk music. ............................................................................................................................................................
Paul McNamara: '''' Paul is from in Middlesbrough and is a fine guitarist and singer. He loves traditional music from around the world. He has a number of beautiful songs in collaboration with Roberto Garcia; current projects include translating and updating songs from the French tradition, many of which have tunes of stunning beauty and which seem rarely to be exposed to a British audience. ......................................................................................................................................................
Sue Hewson: '''' Sue was raised in Hove and Welwyn Garden City where she was classically trained on piano. When learning that even fully grown, her fingers could still only span two keys, she opted to learn fiddle instead, which she loves. Sue’s taste’s are eclectic rooted mainly in traditional music from around the world, blues and jazz. When the fancy takes her she has been known to play some nice English concertina as song accompaniment. .........................................................................................................................................................
Gina Reid: '''' Georgina has music in her blood; her father is a well regarded jazz musician and she was trained classically from an early age. Gina has wide ranging musical tastes and experience, having played in string quartets, orchestras and in church. In 2001 she was forced by Sue to join the Millrace Ceilidh Band and her conversion to folk began. When Tam Lin reformed in 2006 she was an obvious choice to work with Sue on that famous twin fiddle sound. ....................................................................................................................................
Tam Lin was born in early 1999 bringing together the talents of young fiddle player Debbie Chalmers, the flutes and whistles of Tim Hogan and the vocals and bodhran of Alan Hewson. The trio was then joined by bass player Paul Lummas. They released their debut CD 'Farewell to Reason' in August 1999 with instant success; taken up with enthusiasm, it secured immediate bookings for more than a year in advance including a Highlands & Islands tour, live national radio broadcasts and CD airtime and festival bookings including a main concert at Broadstairs Folk Festival. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In early 2001, the band reformed as a trio bringing in Sav Malbaski on flutes, whistles, vocals & guitar and James McGee on fiddle; Alan remained on lead vocals, bodhran and various percussion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On December the first 2002 with Glasgow based fiddler Aidan Broadbridge standing in for James McGee and still buzzing from a vibrant St Andrews Day concert the night before, the band gave a spirited charity performance to an appreciative audience in the picturesque village of Ashwell in North Hertfordshire. The event was recorded and resulted in the 22 track album Eilidh. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Between January 2003 and March 2006 Alan and Sav performed regularly as a duo and with various guest musicians as Tam Lin including, Colman Og Connolly, an All Ireland champion flautist and piper; Harriet Earis, All Britain champion harpist; Steafan Hannigan champion piper and champion of too many other instruments to mention; Saskia Tomkins fiddle; Sue Hewson-fiddle and Blowzabella's Dave Shepherd on fiddle. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In March 2006 the new formal line up came together. Alan & Sav were joined by Sue on fiddle, Georgina Reid from Millrace Ceilidh Band on fiddle and by Paul Gunningham on guitar. Tragically, Sav Malbaski was killed in a RTA in October 2006, and Paul Gunningham died in May 2007 following a RTA in March 2007. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following the RTA which laid singer guitarist Paul Gunningham low, the dual talents of singer guitarist Paul McNamara and multi instrumentalist Roberto Garcia were brought in to cover for Paul on existing Tam Lin bookings. When Paul Gunningham tragically died, the duo stayed on.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The band have since commenced work on new material and new arrangements of some old favourites. Paul was to be remembered with a festival in his name at the Baldock Folk Club on March 28th/29th 2008. His last and unreleased studio recording will feature on the new Tam Lin album to be released in July 2008.
Thanks for the add! Just tried to make a pun out of your band's name (since the tune, Tam Lin, goes by both those other names, Howling Wind and Glasgow Reel). Sorry to have made any confusion on your part...Vonnie from 2 Bits.
