The Throw-offs were formed in 2004. Originally a 3 piece Lew, Tom and Adam decided they wanted to take their music much more seriously and make the songs far less serious.
We met Jake through playing the Soundhole gigs in Halstow and he soon added a new depth to the songs which wasn't possible with one guitar. Plus he looks like Chesey Hawkes.
We named ourselves The Throw-offs in respect for some random guy who had a whole drum kit in the back of a Vauxhall Corsa, and every time he slowed down it looked like the snare would smash through the back window!
Thanks to some tactful blagging we started practicing in the expulsion unit of New Brompton College, using a strange and ancient PA they kept in the cleaning cuboard. (presumably forgotten about by everyone except us and the cleaner)
As if that wasnt wierd enough we decided we wanted some brass, simple enough you might think but back then the only local band we knew with brass was the mighty (and much missed) Battleska Galactica, we were stumped.
Luckily Lew and Adam came to the rescue, they had been moonlighting in an 11 piece Jazz band and managed to convince Cobby to come jam with us. After a couple of hours we gave him an illegally downloaded CD of ska punk hits and told him to come back next week. To everyones utter amazement he did!
We began gigging soon after, people seemed to like us which came as a shock! so we kept doing it for two whole years! Then in 2006 Tom decided to go to uni and in came half time substitute Kenny.
More gigs followed thick and fast but unfortuantly the band split in 2007
And thats how it stayed for 2 and a half years. But in 2009 Tom retured from university, for the first time in nigh on 3 years the original 5 throw-offs sat down together had a beer and reminised. It was soon decided that we should have another go at it. So this summer we will be back. New material is being written as we speak and gig dates will be up soon!
