Influences
Apart from the various early music collections that we source material from, our musical influences are wide and varied. Bands that have been instrumental in helping us define our sound include (in no particular order):
Blowzabella, Philip Pickett, Patrick Bouffard, La Chavanee, Tapage, Ashley Hutchings and the Albion Band (particularly their repertoire from the 1970s featuring Philip Pickett), Pyewackett, Rosbif, The Musicians of the Globe Theatre (Philip Picket again!), Les Witches, Piffaro, David Munrow, The Broadside Band, The Wendigo, Xim, Ti Jaz, Filarfolket, and not forgetting an obscure and long defunct Chester-based folk band by the name of Mercer's Daughter.
Sounds Like
The Time Bandits' current repertoire includes European early music and renaissance dance tunes (including material from 'Dansereye' published by Tielman Susato in 1551, 'Terpsichore', a collection of popular European dance music published by Michael Praetorius in 1612 and John Playford's Dancing Master first published in 1651). The band also plays a broad selection of contemporary Anglo-European material. A small, but growing, proportion of our music is self written.
Why the name the Time Bandits? The band chose its name from the Terry Gilliam 'Pythonesque' movie of the same title. Similar to the spirit of the movie, the remit of the band is, in essence, to be musical 'time travellers' raiding and pilfering over 500 years of musical material to be brought back for a modern audience.
