    Toby Young's Interests
GeneralComedy writing, the theatre, movies, books, television.
MoviesI thought the best movies of 2006 were Apocalypto, Little Miss Sunshine, The Queen, Venus, Longford, Children of Men, Flags of Our Fathers, The Prestige and Borat.
TelevisionAt the moment: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Peep Show, House and The Shield.
BooksCharles Dickens is my all-time favourite novelist, but I also like Austen, Eliot, Thackeray, Trollope, Wodehouse, Waugh, Amis (Sr), Fitzgerald, Hammett and Chandler. My favourite contemporary novelist is Philip Roth, though I have a big soft spot for James Ellroy, and my favourite non-fiction writer is Tom Wolfe. His essay about the night Leonard and Felicia Bernstein played host to the Black Panthers--Radical Chic--is the kind of journalism I'd like to write.
HeroesBilly Wilder.

   Toby Young's Blurbs
About me:
I'm a 45-year-old writer currently living in London. In 2001, I published a book called How to Lose Friends & Alienate People about trying (and failing) to take Manhattan and I've written a sequel -- The Sound of No Hands Clapping -- about my equally unsuccessful attempt to make it in Hollywood. (Ironically, in 2008 How to Lose Friends & Alienate People was turned into a film starring Simon Pegg and Kirsten Dunst -- something you can read more about on my blog. Or click here to see a short film I made for the BBC about visiting the set in New York -- and, inevitably, being thrown off) For the past few years, I've been earning a living as a freelance journalist, mainly for the Guardian and the Spectator, where I worked as a drama critic for five years. In 2003, I co-wrote my first play, an adaptation of How to Lose Friends & Alienate People which I appeared in as myself. Since then I've written two more with the Spectator's current drama critic, Lloyd Evans: Who's The Daddy? (2005), which won a Theatregoers' Choice Award for Best New Comedy, and A Right Royal Farce (2006). From 2008, I've also been appearing as a regular judge on Top Chef. You can learn more about my current activities -- and access an archive of my work -- on www.tobyyoung.co.uk.
Who I'd like to meet:
Woody Allen, Larry Gelbart and Jennifer Connelly, though not necessarily in that order.

Hello there, Mr Toby Young!
I used to read your interesting and entartaining articles, some time ago...
We have a friend in common, by the way.
I'd love to get in touch with her, again: I lost her contact details, therefore I am unable to contact the lady in question.
Will you help me in this, please??
I'll get you drunk with vintage red wine, from Sardinia as a thank-you gesture....would that be alright??
And...would that be enough??
I'll await your response.
A very Happy New Year to you,
A

I just saw the movie, and really enjoyed it. I really love your book, and it was interesting to see a movie version of it.
What's it like seeing a film loosely based on your work/life?

Saw the film yesterday, the part where Clayton throws your t-shirt out the window (look it up) was hilarious!

I wonder what room you're in now?

Hi Toby! Long time no "write!" I went to the movies today, and staring me in the face was a HUGE stand-up display for your movie! I am SO excited for you! Will you be in New York when it premieres? I would love to take you out to lunch as a thank you for all of the advice you've given me. Either way, congratulations, I am so happy that your story is getting the notice it deserves.
All my best!

Hi there, just wanted to let you know that my new book, Holly Would Dream, is finally in stores! It's about a modern day Holly Golightly whose story parallels Sabrina, An Affair to Remember, and Roman Holiday. It's the perfect summer read. Hope you'll pick up a copy today. Congrats! I heard your movie is being made.

Hi Toby, you just can't help but make friends these days. And Simon Pegg as a young (no pun) you, looking forward to the film.

I suppose that definitively answers the 'who'd play you in the movie of your life' dinner party question. By the way, I'd be played by Mike Myers.

Thank you, Laz.
