I have played fiddle in cajun, country and western swing bands for many years. I love accompanying the haunting bittersweet songs of Iry Lejeune, Hank Williams, Bob Wills and more heroes of a golden age of American music. I have often wanted to make my own music but don’t want to attempt to just recreate the music of the 1940s and 1950s . Plus I’m no lyricist or singer. A way forward came with the discovery of Late Junction and Mixing It, BBC Radio 3 evening shows, in 2004. There I found an eclectic collection of wonderful ancient and new sounds from all continents. The contemplative and interesting music inspired me to set about finding my own direction.
I experimented with new ways of playing the fiddle and added in a bit of guitar, timple (a Canarian 5-string thing), a dulcimer, melodica, saw and more. Aided by a sequencer for a few beats and bleeps to add colour and texture to the music, I started to capture sounds from inside my head. Liberated from conventional song structures, the pieces flowed in unexpected directions. I am a lifelong lover of dub and reggae and incorporated some of the techniques of Jamaican studios into the production, striving to strip the music down to its essential core.
Playing fiddle on sessions for the Rootsman - Third Eye Music - and unsung genius Tantric Dove (aka Graham Wright) connected me to kindred spirits and spurred me on to keep making music. It was primarily for my own pleasure, a means of self expression. Friends who heard extracts suggested finding a wider audience, so the first collection of 10 tracks became the album "Ripple". The tracks "Away" and "The Wind Blew" are taken from this CD.
Music is like water or love, it..s unstoppable, and the next set of pieces were devised fairly quickly. They have been released as the CD "Light". Hear "Maiden’s Prayer" (a mashed up Bob Wills tune) and "Remedy" on this site and get hold of the rest of it from www.nightcafe.co.uk
