The Ultra 5/Ultra Psychotic Resurrection: Tryptic Records
Filed under: Uncategorized — leftofthedialmag @ 10:04 am
These sleazy sidekicks of fuzz punk mayhem return on this nicely pressed single, showcasing their twisted talent in full force. Side A features the very woozy, keyboard-drenched, slow and surefire “Sympathy for the Devil.” Although it can’t quite render the psychedelic-gone-voodoo landscape of the original, it does provide an uncanny vibe riddled with ghosts, drugs, and dementia. Definitely the stuff that re-imagines the legendary Cavern club and other primal, freakbeat, blues stomp clubs of days past. The flipside, “Bad World,” is a medium-paced, murky, and midnight prowler, delivered with devilish danceability, if you have worn go-go boots at the ready. The most frantic track is “Out of My Mind,” a real piece of triggered tumult. It roams the haunted aural landscape like a slowed down, wonky version of early Gun Club or Peppermint Lounge era Cramps. As the title unabashedly testifies, this is “Psychotic Garage” from NYC, or more specifically, the dank and eerie warehouse alleys near the East River in Brooklyn. Not for the timid or tepid, these tracks again prove that Bob Urh was a ghoulish garage rocker way before Williamsburg became the crowded post-punk capital of hipster America.

"Ultra 5 are definitelly one of my favorite garage punk bands. I really love their trashy, psychotic and primitive garage punk sound, vox organ with fuzz guitar and cool garage punk image a bit in Cramps style"

Formed in 1986 in New York, The Ultra 5 play a psychedelic garage rock that reminds me of the Velvet Underground and Iron Butterfly, but with the cultured perversion of The Cramps. Fuzzed guitars and organs used the right way make this band’s primitive delivery sheer auditory pleasure. Sexy, creepy, & fun, these 24 tracks are a must-have. - BL
ULTRA PSYCHOTIC RESURRECTION: SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL b/w BAD WORLD/OUT OF MIND - The Ultra 5 (Tryptific Records)
Something from the grave as a long-dead NYC garage band recording is dragged out of the dusty tape cupboard. Narcotic rhythm, swirling organ and Bob Urh's off-kilter vocal make this re-working of the classic Stones tune a dark and worthy trip. It doesn't so much ape the original as dress it up in a hospital gown and take it for a seven-minute walk. The organ from Ariane Root is at the heart of what makes this 1992 recording so great. The flip shakes you awake with a blast of organ before the strident "Bad World" kicks in, vocals mixed somewhere out there but the song isn't really getting out of second gear. "Out Of Mind" sounds vaguely like the Cramps set to a straight-up beat. Keyboards dominate both these cuts from '87 without the guitar getting much of a look-in. OK, but I'm drawn back to the A side.

Let's start at the first face where, Recorded in 1992, we find what we can say that is one of the best versions of "Sympathy for the Devil" that have ever done. It has it all ... And that farfisa accompanied at all times ... Indispensable!
On the B side, two jewels, where we cross the sound of the early Ultra V. Recorded in 1987, we first "Bad World", a scuffle grezna Fuzz and primitive! after this, almost without giving us time to breathe, we revel in "Out of mind", more aggressive, more wild ...more NeanderthGarage!
Goddamn EP to take into account your individual clubs!
The culprits:
Bob Urh, Ariane Root, Tara McMunn, Anderson and Joanna KJen Kerewan.
The track list:
1 - Sympathy for the Devil
2 - Bad World
3 - Out of mind

Album Title : Ultra Psychotic Resurrection
A welcome surprise from Tryptic Records, a new 7" of Ultra 5 unreleased songs! Now, I always believed that outtakes were unreleased for a reason, and should remain as such, but in this case I can't understand why these little gems were kept buried for 20 odd years! Anyway, on Side A, we get a 7 minute long (!) cover of Sympathy For The Devil, recorded in 1987. This is a really cool take on this standard, as the Ultra 5 grab the song from it's original New Orleans voodoo swamp atmosphere and move it to downtown Brooklyn, adding cool New York drawl vox and punky guitars, making this track feel more at home in CBGBs than the bayoo! On Side B, we get two tracks recorded in 1992, in the classic Ultra 5 psychotic fuzz & Farfisa Garage vein! This release is not only for Ultra 5 completists, but it could and should be an entryway for younger Garage freaks, to the world of the Ultra 5! Well done to Tryptic records for releasing this 7"!!!
