Sounds Like
There’s really no way around the fact that Nate Hill’s voice sounds like David Gray’s. But this is okay for two reasons: I was (fondly) impregnated at least four times while listening to Gray’s “Babylon”. I guess something about that song makes me wanna bone whoever is nearby. (I should probably just get my tubes tied after I get my hands on a copy of the new Upperhand album.) And secondly Hill’s interesting vocals are integrated with unpredictable time signature changes, a rabid pianist, and layers of guitar and bass that might make you think of The Dismemberment Plan or Minus the Bear. - usounds .com _ -
"I hadn’t put in an appearance at New Music Monday for a while, but I was broke and I figured I could bum a few drinks off of Matt A., so what the hell. I ambled into the Rendezvous, was greeted by the lovely bartender ("You’re the one who always gets Matt so fucked up when you drop by!") and soon found myself in the Jewel Box listening to [the Upperhand] play some cool disjointed whaddayacallit, "angular post-punk melodic" whatever. There were some bugged out time signatures mixed with harmony vocals and some pleasantly busy bass lines. Just different enough from the thousand other bands in town trying to cop that sound that I dug it."

The Upperhand has existed in some form or another since 2000, yet didn't reach it's full culmination until 2004. Since then, the four have strived to improve their sound into something atypical in the current music landscape (at least from their perspective). Using piano-driven melodies with a jazzy twist and a unique vocal style, The Upperhand is unlike anything that you've heard before.
Hey guys thanks for the add! I must say I do like Oceans In Kansas -- both the concept and the song, that is. Maybe see you around Sea-town. Take care! Matt
Do find it strange that the band I play with "The Parson Red Heads" tour last summer was called The Kansas Ocean Tour? And neither of us are from Kansas
