For only being around 2 years, The Uprights have established themselves as one of the few remaining bands in the United States with a knowledge and sense of tradition. Hailing from Kansas City , this 7 piece ska and reggae outfit has played with many big ska acts such as The Toasters, and have gained a world-wide fan base.
They released their first album in early 2002, Going Somewhere EP. This 5 song EP has become one of the classics in Kansas City ’s local music scene. Going Somewhere featured the original Uprights line-up. The 8 piece ska band played locally until, in 2003, 4 of the members had to leave to attend college. Lead singer/songwriter Richie Restivo found replacements and booked NYC Ska legends The Toasters at a local venue. The Uprights set at that show was recorded and released as a live album, Live in KC – Kansas City Ska Explosion. This 8 track album was released in early 2004 and has since become another classic among the Kansas City music scene.
Tragically in February of 2004, singer/songwriter Richie Restivo passed away due to stab wounds sustained during a fight. Although extremely hard to do so, The Uprights continued playing shows locally. They played a benefit show on Valentine’s Day 2004 for the newly founded Richie Restivo Music Scholarship Fund, set up by the Restivo family in memory of Richie. They then played another benefit concert on March 20 th, 2004 called “Rock for Rude Boy”. They played to a full house and were asked to play an encore.
Since then, The Uprights have played with acts such as Boston ’s rock steady crew, Westbound Train, and Canadian ska act General Rudie. The Uprights are planning on recording with Stubborn Record’s King Django in September of 2004 and releasing a new full-length album entitled You’ve Got A Lot To Learn. The 11 to 14 track album is planned for release sometime in late 2004. The album is sure to gain respect and popularity among the United States ska & reggae scene.
