Bio
The valtra spring Tractor pop never sounded so good! With rich harmony entwined with reeds and bowed bass, percussive colourful drumming and intricate guitar the valtra spring interpret the songs of Roddy Johnston in a way that is unique and exhilarating for to the listener. The songs tell of Yorkshire life mixed with magical realism. Gritty northern snapshots moulded into the shape of ancient ballad forms. Funny observations from Trans Pennine rail journeys, to laments on migration. The songs read like Raymond Carver’s short stories; the protagonists are often the unreliable narrators of absurd aspirations and twisted reasoning. The Valtra spring bring a modern slant to the basic folk idiom i.e. telling a story through song in essence keeping with the spirit of early blues and country music but with roots firmly planted in English Scottish and Irish traditions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -

Joanna Winster plays clarinet and sings backing vocals in The Valtra Spring. Originally an orchestral musician schooled in America, she moved to the UK to pursue music technology, and then marriage, and then any kind of music she could join in with. She played with Roddy and Kate in one-off sessions for a couple of years and joined the band last summer in her first proper venture as a folkpop musician. Alessandro Salzano is a percussionist and drummer originating from London. He came to Leeds in 2006 to study at the Leeds College of Music and has remained since working as a musician. Alessandro is currently playing and recording with a variety of bands ranging from folk through to jazz and hip-hop, and has been a member of The Valtra Spring since the beginning of January 2010 Kate Badcock, originally from the South of England, studied music at Dartington college of Arts before spending the next 10 years in Ireland, immersing herself in the music there. Since her return to England 7 years ago she has played in techno/acoustic band Tetch, ceilidh band dancing feet and ground breaking roots band Ylem who made their debut album anoushka in 2007 Roddy Johnston hails from Angus but has been living in Leeds for the past twenty years. As well as being an accomplished singer songwriter he is a fine fiddle player piper and singer of traditional songs. He has collaborated and recorded with other musicians of different disciplines as diverse as jazz to north African punk. He is the founder member of groundbreaking funk folk band ‘dynamo zetor’ and collaborated with Kate Babcock to explore the similarities of eastern and western European folk music in the band Ylem. Roddy also plays in ceilidh dance bands ‘Dancing Feet’ and ‘The Stair Heid band’ .When not performing he runs workshops in folk music and teaches fiddle. -
