If we're honest, mainly death. Oh yeah, and that whole existentialist crisis moment. Great.
Sounds Like
A little bit of misery, a little bit of wine, books and old things falling apart. That caving in of your stomach when you realise (just before bed) that everything has gone utterly wrong.

   About The Vatican Cellars
The Vatican Cellars are novel, in fact they are a novel, but then as a lit grad you knew that, right? Novel, because they thought a set of ballads and country songs should be dark but never gothic, should be joyous and yet intricate; in short the indulgence would be yours, never theirs.

So when Mr S. Hughes Esq., (guitarist with Piney Gir), and The Birthday Girl (The Schla La Las) decided to combine the former's love of folk and the latter's love of high heels and harmonium, something truly unique was born.

Picking from the cream of the crop of Oxford's thriving music scene they soon had a drummer called Russell who could understand 9/18 time AND shuffle and a double bassist called Tom who channels pure chaos into walking lines of dastardly brilliance.

Et voila, The Vatican Cellars.

Some call it heartbreak in a glass. Some call it "night-folk". But why don't we all just agree on "excellent" for now.

Releases: The Vatican Cellars EP (Sept. 2007)

"...this is a gorgeous demo. Its acoustic, part-folky backing (all filigree guitar lines and chunky double bass, with lonely melodica on ‘Lost At The End Of The Line’) supports the sweetest melodies. There’s a wistful 60s Albion-ness about it; you could easily hear Doherty or Albarn or even Ray Davies singing ‘My Black Pearl’ in that evocative-of-olde-England way. A demo pregnant with promise. " SoundsXP (Oct. 2007)

"...achingly adorable, the Vatican Cellars feature the combined talents of Piney Gir’s guitarist Mr Hughes and (admittedly previously unknown to us) shoe fetishist and multi instrumentalist the Birthday Girl. Three cuts feature here that offer up finitely drawn morsels of tear stained hurting lo-fi folk bruisers that weep and wallow their forlorn selves into your sympathetic psyche while simultaneously mesmerising you in swirls of winter swept cascades of mellowing beauty." Bloody Awful Poetry Records

Feb 17 2008 6:15 PM

We bring you news to make your lives sparkle and shine. To curl the corners of you mouths. To direct you to the correct side of the bed to clamber out of and to turn your half empty bottle upside down.

After the success of last month, WE ARE BACK!
Wednesday 20th February. At the rather fashionable Punk in Soho. Live bands till 11:30, then dj's spinning the best of indie, shoe gaze, 80's, electro, twee and other such tastiness.

Warning! This product also contains the BAP confession booth, the "World Famous" Bloody Awful Poetry competition (submit a truly awful poem on our page and you could win goodies), a big kiss on the dance floor and maybe some nuts.

Come join us! Lets ply ourselves with enough alcohol to sink a small Oliver Reed.

Kling Klang

I totally buzz off Kling Klang. Fat electro krautrock riffs and landscapes get channeled through amiable scousers.

Quack Quack

Yorskhire's top semi-pro rock band create pulsing rhythmic grooves lovingly fermented from the finest drums, synths and bass they could get their hands on. A very special vintage.

Minghe Morte

Musicianship of the highest calibre which will blow your head clean off. With drums, fucked up sax and bass coming together for infectiously violating rock grooves, tender atmospheres and aggresive spasmodic climaxing.

Curious Voice Duo

Two lovely girls from LIMA* who know their voices. Performing within semi-structures with an innocent improvisational flair, entwining their heavenly voices in gorgeously melodic dialogue. With no added vocal effects.
