Courtney Hinds, aka “Vital” is one of those artists that do his art for the love of it, regardless of whether or not fame and fortune come as a result. For him, “music is life” and the struggle to create and to live is all in the mix of being an artist striving to perfect his art. He is energetic, raw and real in his delivery of lyrics that knock your socks off with a heavy dose of artfulness and reality. His voice is big and powerful and his lyrics are always coming from a real life experience. Looking at “Vital”, one sees a tall athletic frame and almost imposing figure, though, in reality and in person, he is really soft-spoken and truly humble at heart. He is gentle giant, packing the musical punch of a true heavyweight and seasoned veteran.
Born in parish of St. Ann, the cradle that nurtured and gave rise to artists like Burning Spear, and Bob Marley, most notably, “Vital” has come to us out of a tradition of high standards. By the time he was twelve years old, he was already known and respected locally in the dancehall circle of big wigs and super DJ’s, such as then local act Tenor Saw and countless others who have since moved on to stardom and successful careers. He artfully carved out a niche for himself among the pantheon of great dancehall giants. His determination comes out of a sense of doing what comes naturally to him, it is evident from his statement that “music is a natural thing for me; it’s not a matter of career for me. If I was working in the field, I would still be singing my songs of joy,” that he carries the music in his blood as much as he carries the oxygen he breathes. He is music personified.
At the age of 16, Vital immigrated to the United States with his family and settled in Paterson, New Jersey, where he went to Eastside High School and subsequently went onto college from there. His college career was quite a life changing experience. Vital used that experience to find that his true passion, love and ambition, is to live a life of music. That was it, the decision was made. He left college to pursue a career in music and never looked back.
In 1995, Vital returned to Paterson, where he ran into friends from his younger days in the Jamaican dancehall circuit. It was a true blessing for him because they brought him to a local dance promoter, who handed him a microphone and the rest is history. There Vital honored his skills and was able to have an outlet for the heap of lyrics that he has been simmering in, within the backrooms and alleys. He captivated the local dancehall scene and was dubbed “Crazy Head” by his peers and fans, due to his strong, raucous and energetic flow and stage persona. To top this off, he made the decision to follow the Rastafarian tradition and grow dreadlocks, which has cannily made his stage name all the more apt.
It was not until recently that Vital realized the importance of positive lyrics. With that realization he changed his name from ‘Crazy Head’ to ‘Vital’. “I used the name Crazy Head for ten years. Things changed, the game changed, and you grow. I could not get on stage speaking on positive and cultural vibes with a name like Crazy Head.” Vital (meaning - necessary to life) knew the importance of lyrics and the name Vital was just the name to reflect the importance he plans to bring to the music game. His appeal is wide-ranging and ever increasing on the dancehall circle. His single ‘Heart Bun Up’ is burning up the radio waves across the Caribbean. The demand for Vital is growing and he is on the rise. He is coming to the greater dancehall scene with a bang and a new energy that dancehall fans anticipate and so anxiously await. As an artist he carries the promise of greatness with the talent to back it up all the way. Watch out world, it is Vital, the next dancehall king!
