Formed in Kilburn two years ago, the Vitamins take their inspiration partly from 60s blues and partly 70s punk, throwing in a little Stevie Nicks and the Cars along the way and ending up with something beautifully unique.
The bands founding member and principal creative force is Rebecca. Being surrounded by music of all sorts from an early age, she quickly learned to play both the guitar and the piano. We had lots of instruments at home, so it was easy to pick up, she explains, most people in my family are musical. And then there is her voice. Born of a passion for legendary sixties soul vocalists like Etta James, Irma Thomas and Ruth Brown, Rebecca occupies a sultry space that lingers somewhere between the unchecked power and honesty of Janis Joplin and the more contemporary styles of Patti Smith and Kate Bush. Singing songs and feeling free is brilliant, I like that I seem to release whatever feelings I am trying to hide.
The past two years have been busy for the band. Having spent their first year writing and performing in and around Kilburn, they soon broke out of their beloved north London borough to share the good time noise extravaganza show with the rest of the city. 2005 saw the release of the debut single Fire, which was picked up by MTV2 and VH2 and led to a 15 minute short on Rebecca and the band airing on Channel 4s 4 later.
Following the great response to the single, the Vitamins took to the M1 to travel the country and share their whitebluespoppunkrock with the masses. They soon discovered what they liked about touring. It makes you feel rebellious, enthuses Rebecca, you can drink from morning til night. All that you have to do is perform for an hour. It can get messy! Its this feeling of teetering on the brink that gives the band their edge live. Even though the melodies are poppy, a noisy guitar screams over Rebeccas wannabe blues vocal, all the while supported by a deep and dirty southern blues sounding rhythm section. Sometimes you cry because you cant take anymore. Its very exciting.
Looking forward to the future, Rebecca is keen to get back out on the road and tour, tour, tour, a life of long nights, losing myself and finding new friends and the rest of the day free to do whatever you want. And what is it that she wants to do with all that free time? Write lots of songs and be a good person. Lucky us.
