elvis costello, scott walker, the beatles, talking heads, pete townshend, hendrix, lou reed, tom waits, bowie, billie holliday, the smiths, wilco, ray charles, dylan, rufus wainwright, the the, sam cooke, brian wilson, nina simone, cole porter, tom waits, prince, NEP, james joyce, henry valentine miller and christ knows who else...
our krypton son is the alter ego of christopher mcconaghy.
having played the fool in bands for a bit too long (garage bluesmen the mean red spiders, pop phantoms gentle ben
and latterly, red organ serpent sound) christopher finally got his act together and with a head full of noise,
a stringbox, a battered electric typewriter and a fallen instep he began writing tunes.
this was 2 years ago. since then, he has gigged tirelessly playing support to david kitt, gemma hayes, oppenheimer, the jane
bradfords, and fighting with wire to name but a few and has won the coveted 2007 Corona songwriting competition.
since early 2008 he has locked heads and gigged as part of a 4 piece with gary doherty on drums, ciaran coyle on
bass (both formerly of childrens hour/schtum) and robb elliott on guitar (of gentle ben and trip fontane) and
occasionally with fiddle maestro robert peoples and ace trumpeteer bryan morgan. he has recorded a swell bunch of
tracks at home drawing comparisons with costello, brian wilson, the the, nick drake and e.l.o. he lives with himself
and dislikes films with sand in them.
with a lot of Radio 1 airplay, and critical acclaim for his captivating live shows, our krypton son is currently
recording his debut album and it should be a riot. so stick around and enjoy the veal.
"our krypton son is one of the best songwriters i've ever heard! the songs blaze with originality - lyrically,
they capture a truth that you've always known by making it feel like you're hearing for the first time. the blend of
muted trumpet, sweeping piano and delicate acoustic guitar evokes other places and even films awhile, at the same
time, anchored by a voice that is uniquely unaffected and understated and all the more striking as a result. our
krypton son is a serious contender. this is the real thing!" - Stephen McCauley (BBC Radio Foyle/Electric Mainline)
"wistful, delicate vocals and effortless intricate arrangements. a breathtaking nugget just waiting to be discovered." - Charlotte Dryden (AU magazine/The Fly)
"...ethereal beauty. perfect for those long summer evenings in a state of dreamy bliss." - Denise O'Neill (BBC Radio Ulster/ATL)
"our krypton son, a prodigious talent, merging superb musicianship with a great pop sensibility. think ben folds meets ray davies and you're definately in for a treat." - Joe Lindsay (BBC Radio Ulster)
