The Waking Eyes are Rusty Matyas, Joey Penner, Matt Peters and Steve Senkiw. The group formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 2001 as more of a musical collective and recording project than a band proper. From the beginning they have refused to be one-dimensional and predictable, with the only constant in their sound coming from their distinct songwriting style. Their debut album Combing The Clouds is a rich tapestry of neo-psychedelic and orchestral pop recorded in various basements, garages and bedrooms in Manitoba. It was released to critical acclaim on Endearing Records in 2002. Soon after they signed with Coalition Records and recorded the rock album, Video Sound, in Toronto. After extensive touring over the next couple of years and finally solidifying their membership, The Waking Eyes went home to work on something new. From the fall of 2005 until the summer of 2007 they wrote and recorded far too many songs to count. After the dust had settled they were left with a 3-CD set of B-sides and rarities (Operation Walter Prychodko), two side projects (Rusty’s Terrier and Matt’s Royal Canoe) and the real prize - a full length album called Holding On To Whatever It Is. The album was recorded and co-produced by John Paul Peters in Winnipeg and will surely be something completely unexpected. The group is currently preparing for the release of this new record in the coming summer.
Matt and Rusty contribute their voices and accompany them with melodies and chords played on guitars and keyboards. Steve counts from 1 to 4, sometimes to 6, and hits things precisely with sticks and feet. Joey makes his bass sound like a soul singer. Previous members include Myron Schulz and Russ Doerksen
okay apparently i'm not going now. i haven't found anyone to come with me or anything.. so i think you should just pick me up on your way there.. i'll wait on st mary's. :) haha.
that sounds like fun. i kinda wish i wasn't at the forks for the fireworks, it was really crowded as usual. and it was horrible trying to leave afterwards. whatever though!
i'm trying to find someone to come with me on friday! i really want to go, and it's not even far from my house either. and if i miss the trews again i might cry a little.
Summer's going beautifully. I just poisoned the weeds on my lawn today. I'm not big into using pesticide, but I'm not really big into having my yard make my home look like a crack house either. Went to Folk Fest for the first time on Friday. Good music. Bad fashion. Going to see Quinzy play on Wednesday. They're my old co-workers. And I got interested in your band because Mr. Schulz teaches at my kids' school. Damn, Winnipeg's small! Hope your summer is going beautifully!!!!!!
i finally got the chance to listen to the new album from start to finish and it's brilliant! i love the synth sounds u guys incorporated in some of the tracks. cheers on a great album =D
soooo so nice seeing you guys today!! i was so happy. :) i wish we got to hangout a little longer though, it would have been nice to talk for a bit. i'm gonna try to come out on the 18th cause i looove the trews. so much.
Our song "Parliament Of Trees" is available for your wonderful ears, but only for a limited time only. Just head on over to our Space and check it out. Let us know what you think. Are we on the right track? Or are we super duds? Those are questions only you can answer.
So yeah, love love love the new record with all my heart, but if you guys through in maybe an old tune at one of the up coming shows my heart might actually burst! I realize taken literally that's probably not what you want happening at one of your shows, but you get the idea... :)
well I'd love to come out on Canada Day, but unfortunately I'm suppose to work. You know, I'd always like to say hello, thing is I'm rather shy...( except when a good amount of alcohol is involved):S
Found you guys on Secret Broadcast's myspace site. Love the tunes, especially "All Empires Fall"! Hope you get some well-deserved airplay! I'll try to catch you in concert if you come to TO or Kingston.
my summer is GREAT, actually. i've been sleeping way too much, quit my job (worst idea so far), and uh .. yeah. :) how about yours? you should probably play an all ages show soon ... i'm horrible haha. you still in st vital?
