About me: Founded by legendary ballet pioneer Mary Day in 1976, The Washington Ballet (TWB) built an international reputation, presenting bold works by Choo-San Goh, the Company’s first Artist in Residence. Septime Webre succeeded Miss Day as TWB Artistic Director in 1999, growing the Company, the School and TWB’s various community outreach programs. Today, as a constituent company at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Harman Center for the Arts, and the Warner Theatre, The Washington Ballet is known for its youthful and energetic style, performing pieces by Christopher Wheeldon, Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, Nacho Duato, and Trey McIntyre as well as masterworks by Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine, and others.
The Washington Ballet offers dance training through its official school, The Washington School of Ballet, most recently under the direction of the late Rebecca Wright and founded by Mary Day in 1944, and is recognized world wide for its excellence and commitment in classical ballet training. The School trains over 500 local, national and international students each year, with a curriculum ranging from Pre-Ballet for five-year-olds to a pre-professional programs for students 13 to 20 years old, many of whom wish to pursue dance as a career. The school also offers classes for adults from beginning to advanced levels.
The Washington Ballet dedicates significant and meaningful effort to impacting the lives of children through a variety of community programs. Programs include DanceDC, an acclaimed outreach program that uniquely combines creative movement with an integrated language arts curriculum for DC public school children, and our satellite school at the Town Hall Education, Arts and Recreation Campus (THEARC) in the Southeast neighborhood of Anacostia and much more.
The Company Dancers of the Washington Ballet are performing courtesy of the American Guild of Musical Artists.
