The Way of the Ink's Blurbs |
About me:
The Way of the Ink is a documentary on traditional Japanese tattoo, the irezumi.
Pascal Bagot is one of the directors of this documentary. The other one isme, Pamela Valente - I am also tattooed and I have lived in Tokyo from 2003 to 2005.
We want everyone to discover the beauty of traditional Japanese tattoo, through well produced images of tattoo sessions but also through the discussions Pascal, who will be our guide in this journey into the universe of traditional Japanese tattoo, will have with tattoers and tattooed people.
The Way of the Ink has several layers of lecture. It is a film about art, a film which will insist on the esthetics of the irezumi pieces. On human skin, the Japanese tattoo masters engrave real chefs-d’œuvres.
Another layer of lecture of The Way of the Ink is associated to one of the great questions that come accros Japanese society today : the equilibrium between tradition and modernity. Young Japanese people open to tattoos seem more interested in the western style or in the Pacific tribal designs than in irezumi. We will ask about their reasons and motivations because there maybe lays the future of this art. How is it possible to progress in the irezumi style, in order to gain new admirers, without losing the respect for tradition ? Would it be the moment of extinction of irezumi, vowed to exist only in films and books ?
Pascal is one of the characters of The Way of the Ink and is also involved in another layer of lecture of this film. As a journalist, specialized in tattoo, Pascal will lead the discussions with tattoers and tattooed people. When necessary, he will also give explanations. During the film and his encounters with all these people linked to irezumi, maybe to Pascal himself the reason why he works all year long to pay a 3-week trip to Tokyo, where he goes just to have half of his body covered with ink, will become clearer. He must repeat this routine for ten years more if he wants to finish his tattoo, so one can say it is commitment. Why has he made this expensive and restrictive choice, one that shatters his body forever ? This question is frequently asked to Pascal, and he has not yet found a suitable answer. Maybe this film will help him understand his inner motivations.
