With a few years experience taking their distinctive and unconstrained fusion of blues/folk to growing audiences, Melbourne’s The Weathermen have returned after a break spent travelling to again infiltrate the city’s vibrant live music scene. Drawing on the stripped-down sounds of Bob Dylan and Neil Young to the more experimental Tom Waits and Tim Buckley, the duo is a refreshingly unique find that any music-lover would appreciate. Having frequented some of Melbourne’s premier venues, such as the East Brunswick Club and Manchester Lane, and playing to expansive crowds at such events as the Queenscliff Music Festival and Sydney Road Street Party, The Weathermen are developing a large following and evoking increasing interest from bookers and industry professionals. Acknowledged by music identity and head of the Good Booking Agency Alicia Bee as “making waves in the industry,” the duo is keen to pursue their goal in spreading their diverse and infectious tunes to as wider audience as possible.
Having downsized from their previous three-member lineup, The Weathermen now comprises Seb Cunningham (vocals, guitar) and Dylan Bird (double bass, guitar, banjo). With a repertoire ranging from sombre ballads to upbeat folk, the duo can adapt their set to various environments, adding in the odd cover for good measure.
Since reforming the two have been busy composing a whole new set of songs and preparing an updated demo. Recent performances have included a Bob Dylan Tribute at the Edinburgh Castle and a number of shows at the Central Club in Richmond. In the past they have played alongside such like-minded artists as President Roots – winner of Tamworth battle of bands 2006 – and attracted media attention with their accomplishments in Melbourne’s south and the Mornington Peninsula region. With a renewed enthusiasm to extend their highly original sound to Melbourne’s music-loving public, The Weathermen are keen to showcase their brand new set at many local venues and festivals in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates!
