The Weekenders began in 1993 after songwriter and Blow Up Club promoter Paul Tunkin started his search for willing volunteers in the struggle to fight the pop pretenders - he was soon joined by Chris Remington on bass, Steve on drums and James Hender on guitar. By May of that year they had a small fan base and a mail order only 7" "All Grown Up" under their belts which served as ample ammunition when it came to being picked to feature amongst the hottest of post new wave and pre-new mod popsters on the Fierce Panda compilation 45 "Return To Splendour".
In March 1995, the Weekenders breakthrough single "Man Of Leisure" came out on Blow Up Records 002 - an amble through old time music hall with a punk snarl that scored highly in the independent charts and made large inroads to Japan, nicely paving the way in June for their most significant single yet "Inelegantly Wasted" which was launched at a boat party on the Thames and swiftly awarded Single of the Week in Melody Maker. To bring 1995 to a snug conclusion a compilation of these now hard to get singles was released by Blow Up Records called "That Was Now But This Is Then", as an aperitif-type precursor for The Weekender's lost debut album which is still yet to hit the turntables!
"A good listen and, like The Easybeats' Friday On My Mind, doesn't outstay its welcome." Record Collector on 'All Grown Up', September 2007
"They regularly remind me of late Seventies Buzzcocks, or The Jam on peak form." Melody Maker ’95
"Eight classic singles which, in an ideal world, would storm the top of the hit parade and stay there" Melody Maker '94
"A fantastic example of early Britpop. Although only clocking in at 8 short tracks, there is an energy and enthusiasm here that simply isn't matched by the bigger artists that were around at the same time." Amazon.co.uk
