Like the first song on their debut album asks, "Who are The Weirdies?"
Drummer Space Weirdie was a founding member of the Tijuana Bibles, a Toronto garage rock band that did five European tours and issued countless releases over the eight years of their existence. When the Bibles retired, Space wanted to get back to basics in a new project, playing simple, primitive music that makes men drink and makes women dance. He had nothing left to prove, so any new band he started would exist for that one magic word: fun.
Enter guitarist Bad Weirdie. After playing for years with garage punkers like The Pin-ups! and, most recently, The Threat, Bad had no band, and Space knew it. Known for his lively stage presence, bloodied hands and beer-soaked raspy vocals, Bad was just the man to get the crowd going. Space told him the plan – simple, primitive, fun – and Bad jumped on board.
Then they brought in The Weirdies' secret weapon: Minx. This femme fatale had never played bass before, but needed something to keep her busy when she wasn't smoking in the boys' room. Her bass playing is perfect for the band, and her voice – a combination of Poly Styrene, Nina Hagen and Cyndi Lauper – has to be heard to be believed!
Minx quickly penned the words to the first song the band ever wrote, "Party Over Here." In their first 10 practices, they wrote their first 12 songs, all of which appear on their debut CD, The Weirdies In 3D. Recorded, mixed and mastered over a weekend for exactly $500, it is as fine a debut as any band has ever released. From "Let's Get Hot" to "Salt Shaker," "Rough & Tough" to "(I Wanna Play) Defender," every single track is a certified party rocker. All three members contribute to each song, writing words and music, trading vocals and doing backups, and would happily back each other up in a knife fight, a drinking competition or a dance contest.
