Sounds Like
summer... no no spring! The Wells sound like 5 guys in a room trying hard not to play alternative country rock but for some unknown reason always doing just that. I don't know if it's cause country rock is an easy and comfortable fit (think Beanbag in the TV room) or if there's a certain period of our lives where we listened to nothing but country all day and night over and over that we have since blocked from our memory: Anyway here's what some guy said about us (he don't mention what we sound like though, I just like the guy!):
"The Wells were one of my musical ‘finds’ of 2008/09, and ‘Feeling Automatic’ cements them as one of THE best things to burst onto a wider listening public from Woodford Folk Festival & from QLD as a whole. ‘Feeling Automatic’ has chiselled itself into my 2009 Top Five Records, and I confidently predict it ain’t going anywhere in a hurry." Bill Quinn, Trad and Now magazine, Artsound FM 92.7FM (Canberra)
THE WELLS ARE BACK!!!
The Wells are a five-piece Indie Rock Band that started gigging around Brisbane mid 2005. They perform original material (written by brothers Ben & Josh Eckersley) which displays great pop sensibility with big dirty smears of Blues and Country…. and these boys can really sing. Their focus on vocal harmonies and catchy melodic hooks add a great depth to the band’s overall appeal, as their densely layered instrumentation enriches each song. They hail from the sleepy country-town of Lismore, NSW and slowly migrated to the city of Brisbane after they heard they still accept food stamps up here.
The Wells have played numerous live shows including supports for Something For Kate, Gaslight Radio and The Basics. They have also played at Woodford 07-08, Woodford 08-09, Greenfest 08, Brisbane’s Valley Fiesta and probably a whole bunch of other shows that I missed out on seeing as I was drunker than hell for a good few years there and don’t quite recall if I was alive or dead. Finally their new EP "Feeling Automatic" is all said and done, listen to the two lead singles, 'Little Things' and 'Feeling Automatic' and drop us a line to let us know what you think!
HALF A COW RECORDS EP REVIEW (June 2008) the Wells, '…and now we can die happy'
"Originally from Lismore, this Brisbane five-piece have released a seven track cd that you could say falls into a category we are going to call 'adult-folk-pop'. Other purveyors of this sub-cult include Jack Johnson, Bernard Fanning, Gomez and Ben Harper. So you can sort of see where the Wells are coming from. And it's a solid collection of well-written and performed tunes.
The opening track 'Tell Her' is the one to get the ladies in, and if the band could suddenly get national radio coverage with this one, it would be a sure-fire hit. It's got the lyrics about lost love, a great sing-a-long melody and the right sort of acoustic guitar that seems to get the girls going these days. Well, it worked on my wife as she commented "this is a lovely song, darling", walking past the office door, "another cup of tea?" Thanks guys!
'Ohio' has a catchy chorus and a cute story about a boy and girl hooking up after many years and the boy forgetting they used to know each other and then..."we fell in love anyway and we bought an old car and we ended up with two kids on her father’s old farm in Ohio". This song wouldn’t be out of place on a Ryan Adams album (one of the country-pop ones).
The Wells are brothers Ben Eckersley (vocals) and Josh Eckersley (drums) with Gavin Henderson (guitar), Karl Sawczynski (piano) and Joel Dierselhuis (bass). The bio mentions 'this crazy period of hiring and firing band members' so it looks like there was one or more previous bass players involved in the recording. The very-well-put-together-I-might-add press kit continues with a quote from an interview: 'we are fair and decent young gentlemen who play laid-back pop music with great big dirty smears of blues and country'. Couldn’t have said it better myself." - ND
