Here's the latest....
While The Well Wishers have no intention to subtitle their latest release the "Difficult 3rd Album" as Billy Bragg did with Talking With The Taxman About Poetry, How I Won The War... is somewhat of a risky proposition. The album marks a notable artistic step forward and finds the band breaking through some of the pure power pop barriers of their first two records.
Drawing equal influence from 80's post-punk and classic power pop, the album offers a poignant, yet decidedly pessimistic take on the metaphors of love and war - all wrapped in a dense, fervently melodic package. Tracks like "Grey Skies Black" and "Broken Glass" burst to life with pulsating guitar riffs, swirling effects and pounding drums...while more the melody-laden hooks of "I'm In Love" and "Seashells" recall the Well Wishers most know and love.
Recording most of the album tracks at his home studio allowed WW frontman and brainchild Jeff Shelton
the freedom and flexibility to experiment, embellish, explore, and re-take after re-take until everything was completely perfect. Contributions from drummer Nick Laquintano and collaboration with San Francisco filmmaker/musician Chris Brown on the track “After Dark” add additional flavor and passion to Shelton’s primarily solo approach.
The album also features a bonus track cover of the Chameleons UK classic “Nostalgia”.
The Rest of the Boring BIO...
Following the demise of Spinning Jennies, one of San
Francisco's most revered and long-lived power pop
bands, frontman Jeff Shelton formed the Well Wishers
to explore his talents as a solo artist and further mine
the deeply melodic foundation of the Jennies' unique
style of pop.
Since forming in 2003, the Well Wishers have released two full-length albums on pop-friendly NotLame Records - 2004's "Twenty-Four Seven" and 2005's "Under the Arrows". Based on a solid foundation of melody, songsmith, and the ever important "musical hook", both albums offered a warm, full-bodied sound and engaging take on the typical power pop formula.
Listen for The Well Wishers tomorrow morning from 6-8am (CST) on the Thursday Morning Throwdown radio show, WEVL 89.9FM Memphis, and streaming live everywhere at http://wevl.org/webcast.php
