Welcome to the new face of alt-country. Dark driving music. Bar-stool stories of grown-up disappointment told on highways across Canada.
The Wheat Pool stems from the songs of two brothers, Robb and Mike Angus, and the band’s emphatic delivery of dark, amped-up country-rock. Formed in the early days of 2005, their reputation was quickly formed around the brother’s rural obssessions, deeply rooted Canadiana, and fierce performances. Sound raised on the new and old: Steve Earle, Neil Young, Wilco and The Weakerthans. With timeless themes of death and good old-fashioned longing, these are songs best appreciated in your car, on a dirt road, late at night, chasing trains in the dark.
With years of experience between the four members playing in the local and regional music scene, the band patiently worked at refining themselve and building a solid fan base before entering the studio. Two years of steady performances around western Canada followed, sharing the stage at festivals and clubs with such performers as Amy Millan (Stars), Leeroy Stagger, Elliott Brood, and Danny Michel.
“One of Canada’s best new bands.”Grant Lawrence, CBC Radio 3 host
“Township” is the culmination of those efforts, a sincere collection of songs wrapped in haunting snapshots of prairie landmarks. Released in the fall of 2007 on Shameless Records Canada, “Township” quicly exceeded the expectations of fans and critics, receiving top reviews from the media (“Glowing Debut” The Edmonton Journal; “Sincere… addictive…” Exclaim!), and quickly finding its way onto the Canadian college radio charts (Earshot top50, CBC Radio 3 top10). The success of the record has taken then around the country, and the band continues to make its mark playing shows across Canada, with plans to begin work on a new record in 2009.
