About me:

www.wilderness.org

The Wilderness Society is a non-profit organization of scientists, activists and regular folks dedicated to the protection of America's wilderness areas.

So whether we are fighting to keep logging trucks out of Giant Sequoia forests or oil rigs out of wildlife refuges, it is our love of wide-open spaces and the preservation of our wilderness heritage that drive our actions.

Our Campaigns

Wilderness. Designated Wilderness Areas are the most pristine places left in America. Wilderness clears our air and filters our water. Wilderness provides essential habitat for wildlife, including endangered species. And wilderness is a natural retreat from the stress of our everyday lives. The Wilderness Society has helped get 105 million acres of land classified as Wilderness and it is our goal to give an additional 200 million acres the same level of permanent protection.

Roadless Areas. We are currently engaging the Bush Administration in a battle to save the Roadless Areas Conservation Rule. The 2001 Roadless Rule prohibits new road building in pristine wilderness areas and makes it very difficult for logging companies and developers to enter roadless areas. Ever since President Bush repealed the bill in 2002, The Wilderness Society has been front and center for the long legal battle to save the Rule. Check out this map of to find roadless areas at risk in your state.

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Arctic Refuge is one of America's last great wilderness places and is home to millions of animals including polar bears, caribou and peregrine falcons. For years, The Wilderness Society has worked to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from being carved up by oil companies. Check out our picture section to see some Arctic Refuge wildlife, and to see what oil industry sprawl looks like.

Eastern Forests. There are few pristine areas left in on the east coast, so ensuring their protection is all the more important. From the rare bottomland hardwood forests of Mississippi to the unbroken boreal in Northern Maine, The Wilderness Society works hard to ensure that future generations will have wilderness nearby wherever they live. Check out this interactive map to learn more about wilderness areas in eastern America.

The public lands that The Wilderness Society is dedicated to protecting include:

National Wildlife Refuges
Arctic NWR, Chincoteague NWR, Key West NWR

National Forests

White Mountains NF, Tongass NF, Klamath NF

National Monuments
Canyons of the Ancients NM, Sonoran Desert NM, Grand Staircase-Escalante NM

National Parks
Yellowstone NP, Grand Canyon NP, Great Smokey Mountains NP

National Historic and Scenic Trails
Oregon Trail, Appalachain Trail, Iditarod Trail

Here is my Earth Day wish for all...Choose 1 environmental organization (this or any other) and get involved...or pick 1 you are involved with and take on an even more active role this year. The need for change is monumental...the momentum for change is happening now...the way of change is through people like us doing all we can.

Easter Morn:

Easter morn with lilies fair
Fills the church with perfumes rare,
As their clouds of incense rise,
Sweetest offerings to the skies.

Stately lilies pure and white
Flooding darkness with their light,
Bloom and sorrow drifts away,
On this holy hallow'd day.

Easter Lilies bending low
In the golden afterglow,
Bear a message from the sod
To the heavenly towers of God.

Irish Home Prayer:

God bless the corners of this house,
And be the lintel blest,
And bless the hearth and bless the board,
And bless each place of rest,
And bless each door that opens wide
To stranger as to kin,
And bless each crystal window pane
That lets the starlight in,
And bless the rooftree overhead
And every sturdy wall.

The peace of man, the peace of God,
The peace of love on all.
