On a blistering August day in 1927, an unusual number of people were headed to the city of Bristol on the Tennessee/Virginia border, folks who didn't venture there much. But word had it that a talent scout for Victor Records was in search of acts to market as part of that company's NEW SOUTHERN SERIES and would be recording musicians in a makeshift set-up in a Bristol warehouse.
An old Hupmobile struggled along the rutted roads to Bristol that day. Inside, a woman tried to hush a crying infant. Another shifted uncomfortably, eight months pregnant with her first child. At the wheel was a somber, lanky man, a bona fide jack of all trades, who believed almost irrationally that he could transform these two mountain women into recording stars.
Three flat tires and a forded river later, this unassuming trio, A.P. Carter, his wife Sara, and sister-in-law Maybelle, who professionally billed themselves as THE CARTER FAMILY reached Bristol. When they learned that they would be one of twenty acts recording for Victor's Ralph Peer, they were a bit daunted. Still, the Carters went about readying
themselves and their instruments as the sound recordist stared silently. No one really expected much from these people. And yet once the women began to sing, everyone was enthralled.
What happened that August in that warehouse was no less than the birth of the country music industry.
The Carters would have an impact, not only in their day but in years to come. Generations of musicians in and out of the country realm would cite them as influences. Artists like Elvis Presley, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and others too numerous to mention would record Carter Family material or else "borrow" melodies to create new popular songs. The Carters cut a wide swath through American music and made contributions that are so ingrained in our musical tradition as to be obscured.
Through interviews, archival footage and contemporary musical performances THE WINDING STREAM will tell the story of this seminal American family.
THE DIRECTOR
Beth Harrington is an Emmy and Grammy nominated independent film producer and director, who has been making media professionally since 1977. Her films often focus on American culture, history and folk traditions. Prior to her work on THE WINDING STREAM, Beth wrote, produced and directed WELCOME TO THE CLUB: THE WOMEN OF ROCKABILLY, a music documentary about the pioneering women of rock & roll which was honored with a 2003 Grammy nomination, and has been seen on public television and at film festivals in the U.S. and abroad. Her previous work includes the critically-acclaimed autobiographical film, THE BLINKING MADONNA AND OTHER MIRACLES and various shows for PBS including the Peabody Award Winning film DATING IN THE AGE OF AIDS and the National Emmy nominated films IN THE PATH OF A KILLER VOLCANO and APOLLO 13: TO THE EDGE AND BACK.
THE PRODUCERS
Beth is Producing THE WINDING STREAM along with two of her sisters, Nancy and Amy. In addition to THE WINDING STREAM, Nancy and Amy are currently in development for an emerging VOD, broadband and mobile phone content provider delivering family oriented reality-based content. They also Produce the DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK FILM AND MUSIC FESTIVAL and related events, with festival founders Allison and Tiffany Anders.
As a Vice President for Warner Bros. feature films for 10 years, Amy helped build Warner Bros. first in-house visual effects company (WBIT) and oversaw Post Production and Visual Effects on over 250 films including THE MATRIX, HARRY POTTER and A PERFECT STORM. Prior to that she worked for Warner Bros. Television, Paramount Pictures, Viacom Television and MTV in various aspects of Production, Post Production and Visual Effects.
Nancy founded and ran the InStages Musical Theater Company in Boston, Massachusetts where she produced the long running CURLY: THE MUSICAL and the Christmas production of GIFT OF THE MAGI. Since 1986, she has operated her own Graphic Design/Marketing business. Before launching her independent career, she worked for the Weltman Group, a division of Allied Advertising, where she designed and produced the national newspaper campaigns and Academy Award trade ads for Paramount Classics and Miramax Films.
THE WINDING STREAM is being executive produced by Eric Geadelman and Anastasia Brown of 821 Entertainment Group, a multi-platform media holding company with integrated assets in film, music and digital media technologies. Anastasia can be seen as a judge on USA Network's NASHVILLE STAR.
