Interests

  • General

I enjoy horseback riding, photography, writing, gardening, reading, hiking, swimming and yoga. I have trained in Taekwondo, Taichi, and Judo. I am a twin. My sister and I were nearly two months premature; and are eleven minutes apart. Funny fact about me: I'm vaccinated for rabies after an incident where a Rottweiler nearly took my finger off, stripping the skin off the bone, and then up and died only minutes after it bit me. The dog's owners took a "homeopathic" approach and did not vaccinate their dog. Two weeks earlier the dog was bitten by a wild animal when they were camping. So, oops, I had to go through the whole rabies post exposure thing. Several months later, a chihuahua bit me and died. I was deemed, "the angel of death" for a while at the veterinary hospital where I once worked.

  • Music

Coldplay, Linkin Park, Muse, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Dead Can Dance, Erasure, Enigma, Lasgo, and many, many movie soundtracks - some by Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Giorgio Moroder, Lisa Gerrard. I also like classical guitar and violin - Leo Kottke, Vivaldi.
  • Movies

Pretty much anything horror and science fiction. Some of my favorites are The Abandoned, Pan's Labyrinth, Neverwas, Watchmen, Blade Runner, and all the Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings films. I like M. Night Shyamalan (especially his movies before Lady in the Water). There's a lot of more abstract movies that I love (some hard to find) - Dark City, Metropolis (the 1984 version), The City of Lost Children, The Keep, White Dwarf. I would just love to be scared in a movie - but I'm pretty difficult to scare and it hasn't happened yet - ever (except when I watched Salem's Lot with a 103 degree fever. But that doesn't count.) Frankenstein (Luke Goss) is also a favorite.
  • Television

Old 'off the air' stuff - Farscape, The Pretender, Witchblade, Forever Knight. Newer shows - Eureka. I like Masterpiece Theater on PBS.
  • Books

I am as open-minded about books as I am about movies and music. I read simply to enjoy. Horror: Stephen King and Clive Barker. Classic: Bleakhouse, Northanger Abbey, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Flowers for Algernon (I'm going to name a pet that one day); Young Adult: Harry Potter, The Little White Horse, The Secret Garden, Watership Down; Science Fiction/Fantasy: The Dark Materials Trilogy, Chronicles of Narnia; Suspense Thriller/Misc: John Grisham, James Patterson, Mary Higgins Clark. I'm currently reading a biography on Diane Arbus
  • Heroes

My paternal grandfather, Clarence Borgens. He came to my rescue when I was a child, and I think he loved me more than anyone else in the whole world - ever has or ever will. He was a kind and gentle man, and always looking to help others. My ability to forgive and optimism are characteristics I learned from him.

About me:

Finding the Unicorn

Unicorns were only a myth, but Anouk believed, and when her childhood years were gone, she could still see them. But then a war came and swept everything she knew away and finding the unicorn again was like chasing a dream. There were obstacles of men and war to overcome, and the times were filled with death, starvation, and suffering. It seemed that light had gone out of the world, and Anouk, along with her friends, endured to fight the darkness. And through it all, in the distance, the voice of a dragon beckoned.

My name is Carey Borgens and I am a science fiction and fantasy author, hoping to reach as many book lovers as I can. My books target an audience from teenagers to adults. They are based on my own dreams and nightmares.

The Wolf Experiments is based on a dream I had when I was twelve years old, one that I tinkered with for two decades.

Of course, there is a message in all this. The subplot of the story is global warming, and something near and dear to my heart, saving the wolf.

I've also published a short story called "The Rat in the High Castle" through Amazon Shorts. This is a post-apocalyptic tale about a girl, living in a fragmented society ruled by a hidden monarchy, who must battle her fears to prevent the next lottery which controls population by killing children. In this era, animals have long been feared, and she must befriend them to save her people. Click on the title below to order.

UPDATE 2/27/2009

The 2nd edition of The Wolf Experiments is now available. Recently repaired after a mistake with editing and publishing on the first print.
