Arthur is a man of many paradoxes. Although he speaks in an eloquent manner, and appears to have been classically educated, he struggles with the concepts and technologies of the modern day. According to Doug, he doesn't know how a DVD player or velcro functions. He is unable to tell the difference in quality when Carrie and Doug use the $1,000 Arthur lends to them to buy a refrigerator that only costs $60. Of course, such eccentricities are just used to add humor to the show.
