In January 2007, Gainesville sculptor/painter Kayla Prommersberger introduced Orlando novelist/spoken-word artist Joe Pasquale ("The Nude Bandit") to Gainesville writer/poet/gadfly David Maas ... and The Word Is Spoken! was born.
David organizes spoken word shows in an around Gainesville and helps aspiring poets get recorded, published, and featured at shows.

POETRY SHOWS - based in Gainesville, FL. Most of the shows are here, but Gainesville poets and friends sometimes hit the road. We'll eventually come to your neighborhood.

Many poets are featured regularly. TWIS! connects with poets in ThirdEyeSpoken and at the CMC Poetry Jam, and members of the Letterbomb Collective, Gainesville Poets and Writers, and One Nation

Did you miss Tom Miller reading his classic poem "Bum" at The Word Is Spoken! on August 24, 2007?

I woke up with a cold sweat today.
The rising in costs.
The food for the month.
The food for the mouth.
starvation is not an option
Credit card is not a requirement to eat.
Income taxes on food is not an option.
I’m trying to find the lowest basket.
Economics is a major factor on what we eat ?
My food choices on what I can eat.
The insufficient with no concern on what I can eat.
No members of the family should ever go hungry.
If you can just take some sugar from your body
Just to add sugar to somebody’s Elsies
You have just lower your costs on what’s to come.
Calories is just the lowest part of diet for the body.
Let your thousand percent be from your own hand.
Your solution will be applied to yourself.
We don’t need your money.
The sandwich would be just fine.
Make yourself your own payroll then you shall see.
Uncle Sam. will not be able to touch you in every way.
Poor people is just a word they made for us
To be insufficient, we eat because we are people.
Just Remember who your soul belongs too,
And we will be Just Fine.

You are so beautiful external, and internal

Your adequately responsive is to touch the sky
Your are accurate in your reception.
Your quality is excellent today.
You have option two display.
Let your internal soul re-appear.
I wanted to make sure I’m actually
got use of you to write a review on you.
I've have never been so pleased with you.
You have never ask for anything for yourself.
So where do I even begin?
Bare in mind that your previous call was vain.
Fancy little gadgets, and knocks were just things
That OTHER people had on their phones. Not YOU
I’m impressed with you, things that most people
Don’t know about you.
I’m already ready to use you forgive you.
I honestly shunned, and touch by you.
Your "chrome" became attractive to me.
I've read complaints about the texture.
Your old fingerprints honestly will be new
So don't worry about worry’s
I’m willing to stand with you so don’t worry.

 "...He wasn't old,
he just needed better conversation and,
without undoing what little good that was growing,
grew to know what would soon
become old and knew since now he knew
there was nothing new under the sun.
No noble wars to be won.
Only fought for the wish of progress
but, not long after it started,
he started to give in to avoid the drunk fits
directed toward innocent friends of guilty people.
She said she'd still stay if he keeps her
in the corner of his shades from time to time.
Forgetful enough,
when he takes them off,
she becomes lost from view.
So, rash and dumb, he runs to another one,
but when the sun becomes too bright
he gets to look in the corner of his mind
to remind him of his promise.
"We will not grow old."
"We'll live in the moment of splendor."
She wondered under best kept brains.
Then, in the same place at the next instant,
her heels rushed by the space that was normal
to occupy her head,
and then in the following instant,
returned to the floor again.
Over again.
For him too.
They watched upon her as she would
Herself in the mirror except with
doubled the interest and
less invested in their own affairs but
a small price to pay to avoid dealing with
the daily stress of their years.
Already behind them because
now when he wakes tomorrow
They'll be gone after she listens to
her version of the truth since now she knows
he was old only because he was cursed
with almost knew..."

There are other worlds...
(they have not told you about)

Violent Tranquility

Jun 2 2009 6:22 PM

What Am I suppossed To Feel?
Skulls that overflow with an array of flowers. The skin surrounding the eyes are reddened around the sockets. Eyes black as coal, radiant as glass. Skin pale blue as the full moon at it's peak. A Distorted mouth which spits the wicked into the air.
The Spirit soars as unhindered as a raven into the setting sun. One look erect towards the sun as it caresses the skin and conveys warmth to the petals in the head.
Adjust from a perch to pounce while crouched upon a cloud of crimson velvet, worshipping the sun. The winds swirl the sky's clouds into a distortion. Like the ripples of the ocean water.
The trees are of embers. The branches are of ice.
Golden, rank honey pours from the swollen lips, black tar seeps from the mouth.
Lights of energy exude from the palms.
Watching the bodies plunging from the sky, quickly rushing by with their silent screams.
...This is my Violent Tranquility©
