Writers @ Edit Red

Apr 23 2007 5:13 AM

'City Smells' is a new literary project set up by the Edit Red Writing Community.

We are running three writing competitions, Flash Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction and Poetry, all with the theme 'City Smells. The winners of each of these competitions will win $100. But more than this, we will take the best work from each competition and compile a paperback 'City Smells' anthology. The writers who make it into the 'City Smells' anthology will each receive free copies of the book and be paid a royalty in book sales.

To submit to these competition and stand a chance of being published in the 'City Smells' book you must be a member of Edit Red, as the submission process is automated. Joining Edit Red and entering these competitions is 100% free. If you make it into the book, we will pay royalties based on book sales.

Edit Red has existed for many years and was created and is still managed today by non-fiction author Alan Emmins, creative writing teacher Chris Lee Ramsden and literary reviewer Sean Merrigan.

If you are not already a member, we hope you will join and take part in this great literary event. Sign up here for free!

Regards
Alan, Sean and Chris

Mike,

Is there anything going on for Valentine's at the Writer's Garage?

It doesn't necessarily have to be romantic. Ricky and I have been married 15 years, that's plenty romantic enough right there.

dutiful exhumation

for the artist's spire by candlelight
a utensil containing lead or ink
gentle to the proper word
ray johnson was a man of straw.
lace is lovelorn cursive
although set to braille
and paced with thoughts of achilles.
I who wander the claims of shadow
am shamed against the molten tier...
blessed pages to buoyant childhood
mass of the unlettered embryo,
woebegone as devils mocking words
orange as fire and valueless.
trace light with little fingers,
the wooded child seeking its own
smiles into or athwart the sun
as it may solely understand
a shroud of light.
for the artist's spire
is danger in bottles
in dopamine bags and silly expressions,
a mantle on which he places calm
and the trophies of his sadness.
logs in towers and stillborn jewels
although I have yet to unseal my eyes
we conversed of vision
and lesser family
all within an hour of wine.
the sickly fraud of working hours
shackles the soul from breathing;
sat to the simian bonfire with grimace
and meal
siphoned from the immediate breast.
so in a word
distending from time
a wet bell sounds for delivery,
drugged with repetition
and amused in silence
the flicker of perspiration ordains
cigarette and sleep.

offshore
and the dank word whispers internally
wet and meant with sorrow's ladle
and drowned to the residual whisper
of solely a dashboard second.

wandering
and the noise of self adheres
to every wind instrument
like dew to the neptune rose
trapped in emulation
of a man at gallows edge.

half mast
the moony phase of mournful night,
lest on winged spires we condemn
meant words cornered by cones of flesh.

aloft
lorn silence alone and furious
shed like fire until emptiness and ash;
bearing trait of the talking vein
for burnt burgandy half-optimism
in wounded thought and illness.

offshore
a ship climbing from the frozen target
as a pinhead of territory amuses the sun
cyclops redeemed in civil war documentaries
only to ignite the bitter air.

Another unforgettable evening.

You were great as always-except that slight slip on the chorus of that second song--ha. I love that shit!

Terry Graham cracked me up. I loved seeing Gun Club play live!! And seeing Terry up there, talkin''bout the ole daze brought back some very foggy memories. I can't wait till the book comes out. Very funny stuff!

I was forced to leave after Terry, but I did catch a few songs by Freckle. I really enjoyed them.
Thanks again Di Piazza's & Mike Martt.
