The Yaps have been a long time coming. The roots of the band took hold in 2004 when uber-artist Ken Mitchell (guitar/vocals) finished writing and recording the musical score for an instructional video on proper volleyball technique. Shortly after this project was finished, Mitchell saw Pat Iovinelli (guitar/vocals) play a high school talent show. Iovinelli was 28 at the time. They soon began collaborating and performing as an acoustic duo. Their performances were well-received. Mitchell’s versatility and melodic creativity meshed well with Iovinelli’s simple pop sensibility. After an extensive tour of north Berwyn, the duo went on hiatus.
In the summer of 2006, Mitchell and Iovinelli reunited and decided to expand their act into an electric quartet. Mitchell quickly enlisted former KK and the Flying Hamsters of Doom member Joey Rotella (drums). Mitchell and Rotella were old college buddies who were known for uniting for frequent jam sessions and the occasional Tool concert. According to Mitchell, the reason he recruited Rotella, besides his thunderous, precise drumming, was to “provide some eye candy for the ladies.”
Iovinelli then solicited arranger and songwriter extraordinaire Joe Mroz (bass/vocals) to join the band. Iovinelli and Mroz were old friends and had been band-mates in the mother of all garage bands, Small Towne Vampyres. By this time, however, Mroz was already an integral member of another successful Chicago-area band, the Dynamos. In a blatant attempt at rock ‘n roll piracy, Iovinelli tried to lure Mroz away from the Dynamos with a can of beer and the promise of more beer. Naturally, Mroz accepted the beer. However, instead of leaving the Dynamos, he decided to work on both projects.
With the lineup complete, the Yaps spent the last half of 2006 writing songs and making plans for a full frontal assault of the Chicago music scene. With the swagger of a 70’s super-group and the looks of Abe Vigoda, the Yaps combine rock, pop, alternative, blues, punk, and power trash styles to create melodic, earnest and energetic rock.....

I hear that Pat can't make a decision about track order (a lil birdie named Ken told me) so I don't have my cd yet and I can't sing along on Saturday night. Way to go.
we will both arrive at US Beer Co. next saturday. You will play your songs. then we, ours. Then we will armwrestle for supreme lordship of the poprock galaxy, and I shall win and be ascended into heaven to reside with a celestial congress of rocking saints led by Bon Scott, Bessie Smith, and 2/3rds of the BeeGees.
